Generate and manage 3rd-party app passwords

Third-party email apps (that do not use our Yahoo branded sign-in page) require you to enter a single password for login credentials. To generate a third-party app password for Yahoo Mail, sign in to the Yahoo Account Security page, click Create app password under "External connections," and follow the prompts. App passwords are randomly generated codes that let non-Yahoo email apps access your account when they don't use Yahoo's sign-in page. You only need to enter the code once when signing in to the app.

App passwords remain active - even if you change your main account password. To invalidate an app password you must delete it.

Generate an app password

When creating an app password, use a browser that you've used to sign into Yahoo for several days in a row and avoid using Incognito mode. If this isn’t successful, use webmail or the official Yahoo App to access your email. Customer care can’t override this process of determining App Password creation eligibility.

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo Account Security page.
  2. Under "External connections," click Create app password.
  3. Enter your app's name in the text field.
  4. Click Generate password.
  5. Use the one-time password to log in to your 3rd party app.
  6. Click Done.

Delete an app password

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo Account Security page.
  2. Under "External connections," click the app passwords.
  3. Click Delete next to the app password you want to delete.
  4. Click Delete to confirm.
