혁오(HYUKOH)와 선셋 롤러코스터(Sunset Rollercoaster)의 프로젝트 앨범: AAA

혁오(오혁, 임현제, 임동건, 이인우, 객원 멤버 정크야드[JNKYRD])가 타이베이에서 결성된 밴드 선셋 롤러코스터(Kuo-Hung Tseng, Hung-Li Chen, Shao-Hsuan Wang, Tsun-Lung Lo, Hao-Ting Huang)와 프로젝트 앨범 《AAA》 를 발매했다. 이번 앨범에는 2023년 5월부터 약 1년간 혁오와 선셋 롤러코스터가 가평, 서울, 제주 등지에서 매달 긴밀히 함께하며 공동 창작한 8곡이 담겼다.

두 밴드 모두 4년만에 선보이는 앨범 《AAA》는 혁오의 충만하면서도 군더더기 없는 연주와 오혁 고유의 음색, 온난한 타이베이 기후를 연상시키는 선셋 롤러코스터의 낭만적 선율과 다양한 문화권에서 사랑받는 시적인 가사 등, 각자의 장점이 서로를 만나 조화로운 상승을 일으킨 결과물이다.

서로에 대한 오랜 애호, 그리고 협업의 시작

각각 데뷔 10년과 15년을 맞으며 아시아 전역에서 사랑받아 온 뮤지션으로서 혁오와 선셋 롤러코스터의 첫 인연은 더 이전으로 거슬러 올라가지만, 이들의 첫 협업은 2020년 초 시작되었다. 혁오가 《HYUKOH 2020 WORLD TOUR》 공연으로 도쿄를 찾았던 당시, 마침 3집 앨범 준비차 도쿄에 있던 선셋 롤러코스터와 대화를 나누다 오혁이 선셋 롤러코스터의 〈Candlelight〉에 피처링을 하게 되었고, 이후 혁오의 〈Help〉를 선셋 롤러코스터가 리메이크한 것. 팬데믹으로 인해 두 작업은 온라인에서만 이루어졌지만 모든 과정이 물 흐르듯 편안했던 이유는 두 밴드가 서로에게 가지고 있었던 오랜 애호와 존중 때문이었고, 이 과정을 통해 이들은 보다 긴밀하고 본격적인 협업을 상상하게 되었다.

팬데믹이 종식되고 2023년 3월 선셋 롤러코스터가 공연을 위해 내한했을 때 다시 만난 이들은 ‘함께 만드는 음악’에 대한 모두의 바람을 재차 확인했고, 그로부터 1년 여의 시간 동안 이번 《AAA》 앨범 작업에 매진했다.

함께 만드는 음악

2023년 5월, ‘가평 음악역’에 모인 혁오와 선셋 롤러코스터는 일종의 송캠프(songcamp)를 꾸리고 함께 음악을 만들었다. 혁오의 오혁과 선셋 롤러코스터의 쿠오(Kuo-Hung Tseng)가 만든 데모를 함께 완성시키기도 하고, 쿠오의 데모에 오혁이 메인 멜로디를 얹기도 했다. 모든 멤버가 가평에 모여 즉흥으로 발전시킨 첫 트랙 〈Kite War〉와 가평 합주 현장에서 녹음한 마지막 트랙 〈2F 年轻人〉은 공동 창작의 묘가 가장 잘 드러나는 곡이며, DQM이 촬영한 〈2F 年轻人〉 뮤직비디오에는 당시 모두가 누린 즐거움이 고스란히 담겨 있다.

일주일간 여행 하듯 함께한 첫 합주는 이후 1년간 서울, 제주, 가평 등지를 오가며 함께 음악을 완성한 원동력이자, 이번 앨범 프로필 스타일링 컨셉인 ‘음악 유랑단’의 초석이 되었다. 쿠오는 2020년 ‘Tune Glue’와의 인터뷰에서 “음악은 사람 사이의 연결이나 관계에 관한 것이다. 음악은 분명 언어이지만, 서로의 문화적 배경이나 언어를 모르더라도 그것의 감정을 느낄 수 있다는 점에서 보다 더 밑바탕의 언어(lower language)”라는 말을 한 적이 있다. 모국어와 살아온 배경은 다르지만 이번 앨범은 혁오와 선셋 롤러코스터가 함께 연주하고 작업한 음악적 대화의 결과물로서, 마찬가지로 서로 다른 언어와 환경을 가진 관객에게도 말을 건넬 것이다.

AAA

작업 과정에서 가칭으로 부르기 시작한 《AAA》는 이번 앨범의 제목이 되었다. 《AAA》는 다양한 의미를 갖는다. 선셋 롤러코스터가 첫 해외 투어를 갔을 때 직접 운전을 하기 위해 들었던 보험과 이름이 같다는 점에서 안전함과 설렘을 연상시키고, 좋은 호텔과 맑은 물의 등급, 혹은 작은 사이즈의 배터리를 가리키기도 한다. 멤버 전원의 문화적 배경 때문에 즉각적으로 ‘아시아’가 떠오르기도 하고, 누구든지 접근 가능한 지역(All Areas Access)이라는 약어를 생각한다면 오히려 지역성이 지워지기도 한다. 오혁과 쿠오는 앨범을 소개하는 영상에서 《AAA》에 대한 단상들을 나누며, 결론적으로 이를 “무언가 좋은 것(Something good)”, “검증된 것(Guaranteed Quality)”이라고 말한다.

트랙 소개

〈Kite War〉는 가평 음악역에서 합주 셋업을 하던 중 즉흥 연주로 만들어진 첫 곡이다. 곡의 대부분이 두 개 코드로만 이루어져 있으며, 전통적이고 진실한 분위기가 물씬 풍긴다. 긴 공동 창작의 시작이 된 이 곡에 대해 쿠오는 잼(jam) 연주를 시작한지 5분 만에 참여한 모두가 이 곡이 완성되었음을 알았다고 후술했다.

2021년 오혁이 아이패드로 만든 데모에서 시작한 〈Y〉는 반복을 최소화하고 선형적으로 흐르는 전체 구조, 가스펠을 연상시키는 분위기가 인상적인 곡으로, 멤버 전원이 이번 앨범에서 가장 좋아하는 곡으로 꼽는다.

만다린어로 부른 〈Antenna〉는 다양한 언어를 구사하면서도 직설적인 화법을 피하는 쿠오와 오혁의 시적인 가사 작법이 두드러지는 곡이다. 중국어를 모르더라도 부드러운 연음 발음의 아름다움과 몽환적인 연주를 오롯이 즐길 수 있다. 이 곡의 뮤직비디오(감독 Rafhoo)에는 중화권 스타 허광한(Kuang Han Hsu)과 리아 도우(Leah Dou)가 배우로 참여했다.

타이틀 〈Glue〉는 통상적이지 않은 다양한 코드들이 정교하게 얽혀 완성된 멜로디와 이에 대비되는 간결하고 낭만적인 가사가 매력적인 곡이다. 이 곡에서 자연에 내재된 사랑을 떠올린 DQM 감독은 캄보디아에서 자연을 테마로 뮤직비디오를 제작했다. 긴 시간 서로를 휘감으며 한 몸이 된 나무가 형상화하는 사랑과 경이로운 생명력이 담긴 아름다운 장면을 곡과 함께 즐길 수 있다.

〈Young Man〉은 한때 젊음을 대변했던 혁오와 선셋 롤러코스터가 이제 막 맞이한 다음 시기, 혹은 그 훨씬 이후를 상상하는 곡이다. 젊음 이후의 생존과 싸움, 미래에 대한 불안이 담긴 가사와 대비되는 밝고 낙천적인 멜로디가 역설적 힘을 더한다. 한 명의 노인과 《AAA》 멤버 전원이 출연한 SF무드의 유쾌한 뮤직비디오 연출은 바밍타이거의 〈섹시느낌 (feat. RM of BTS)〉, RM의 〈Groin〉 등 뮤직비디오로 잘 알려진 페나키(Pennacky)가 맡았다.

쿠오의 데모에서 출발한 〈Do Nothing〉는 보사노바 무드의 곡으로, 그는 이 곡을 선셋 롤러코스터와 혁오가 함께할 수 있는 가장 완벽한 장르로 자평한다. 보사노바는 선셋 롤러코스터의 1집 제목이기도 한 데다가, 혁오 역시 《사랑으로》 앨범에 묵직하고 서정적인 보사노바를 담아냈기 때문이다. 나른하고 평화로운 휴일을 연상시키는 이 곡은 역설적이게도 쿠오가 중국 투어로 매우 분주하던 중에 만들어졌다.

동료 제임스 포렌(James Fouren)이 〈Antenna〉 믹싱을 체크하기 위해 곡의 속도를 반으로 늦추는 것을 우연히 들은 멤버들이 그 느리고 명상적인 사운드에 매료돼 이번 앨범에 포함하게 된 〈Aaaannnnteeeeennnaaaaaa〉와, 가평 음악역에서 〈Young Man〉을 작업하던 당시 합주실 2층에서 녹음한 날것의 버전을 트랙화 한 〈2F 年轻人〉 또한 흥미롭다. 선물같은 두 개의 트랙은 음악의 시간성과 공간성을 유쾌하게 변주한 결과물이다.

不是 AA 制，是 [AAA] 制：落日飛車與 HYUKOH 共譜之戀

HYUKOH（成員包括 OHHYUK、HYUNJAE、INWOO 和、DONGGEON 以及好友 JNKYRD）與來自台北的樂團「落日飛車」（成員包括曾國宏、陳弘禮、王少軒、羅尊龍和黃浩庭）跨越國界限制，共同譜寫出名為 《AAA》 的新專輯。自 2023 年 5 月起，他們每月一聚，從加平郡到首爾，催生出專輯收錄的 8 首曲目。

兩個樂團睽違四年的全新專輯，選擇聯手推出，兼容 HYUKOH 清晰又豐富多重合聲、OHHYUK 高辨識度的嗓音，落日飛車獨具的台北和煦浪漫氛圍，及無國界的詩意歌詞。雙方獨樹一幟的創作能量在 《AAA》 化成前所未見的音樂新品種。

友誼的起點與長路

HYUKOH 和落日飛車相識許久，今年更是兩團分別出道 10 週年和 15 週年的里程碑。雙方首次合作，始於 2020 年初在東京相遇時的閒聊。HYUKOH 當時正在進行專輯 《HYUKOH 2020 WORLD TOUR》 的巡演，而落日飛車也恰好選在東京開始創作他們的第三張錄音室專輯。

這次見面促成了 OHHYUK 獻聲落日飛車專輯 《Soft Storm》 中曲 〈Candlelight〉 一曲，且落日飛車更翻唱了 HYUKOH 專輯 《through love》 中 〈Help〉。在艱困的疫情期間，這兩首歌為雙方歌迷帶來情感的慰藉。雙方的友誼及對彼此的欣賞，排除了外在所有阻力。合作無間的體驗，讓雙方都萌生更進一步共同創作的想法。

2023 年 3 月，在疫情接近尾聲之際，落日飛車的巡演來到首爾專場，兩團再次見面並確立彼此共同創作音樂的心意，隨即攜手踏上這一年的音樂旅程。

共譜的聲響

2023 年 5月，HYUKOH 和落日飛車在加平郡的 Music Village 1939 舉行了一次自主創作營，開啟兩組人馬的音樂創作之旅，由 OHHYUK（HYUKOH）在國國（落日飛車）的 Demo 上加入主旋律後，兩團再一起完成編曲。專輯的第一首歌〈Kite War〉是兩團在加平郡第一次即興合奏的成果，而最後一曲〈2F 年轻人〉更直接取用在創作營時的錄音，一前一後展現了雙方合作的結晶。DQM 導演的〈2F 年轻人〉MV 完整捕捉了成員們當時的喜悅。

此為期一周的旅行，成為後續推動他們在濟州島、首爾和加平郡繼續協作音樂的動力源頭，也立下此張專輯「音樂流浪者集團」造型方向的基石。

在 2020 年接受‘Tune Glue’採訪時，國國談到「音樂關乎人與人之間的關係或聯繫，因為音樂絕對是一種語言，是一種比較初階的語言——你不需要理解文化背景，音樂就能觸動人心。」

儘管各自擁有不同的人生軌跡和母語，《AAA》 記錄了 HYUKOH 和落日飛車之間透過音樂的深層對話，透過無數精心樂句與即興演奏所建立的緊密聯繫。隨著 《AAA》 的發行，不同背景和文化的聽眾也能一起探索兩團珍貴的對話紀錄，體會頻率帶來的理解與感動。

AAA 的含義

《AAA》 是在創作期間，成員們對於這個計畫的代稱，最後就順理成章成為專輯名稱。《AAA》有多重意涵。首先，這是落日飛車第一次美國巡演所投保的汽車保險公司之名稱，有股飛車旅平險的安全感；三個 A 對「飯店」或「水質」來說也意味著最高標準。作為 “Asia” 的 A，體現了成員們的亞洲背景，但作為 “All Areas Access” (全域通行) 的縮寫，又抹去了所有文化的疆界。OHHYUK 和國國在專輯的導聽影片中討論了 《AAA》 的含義，最終將其定義為「好東西」和「品質保證」的代名詞。

專輯收錄的 8 首曲目

〈Kite War〉是在加平郡時，雙方第一次即興合奏所激發出的光芒。由兩個和弦貫穿全曲，帶來復古而真摯的感受。國國在回想這首歌時表示「即興大概 5 分鐘後，我就知道我們要寫出一首歌了。」

〈Y〉起源於一首儲存在 OHHYUK 的 iPad 中，寫於 2021 年的 Demo。重複頌詠的歌詞、線性的結構，搭配環境聲響，為〈Y〉帶來福音歌曲的渲染力。〈Y〉在團員間被稱為「私心的最愛」，是所有人此張專輯的首選歌曲。

〈Antenna〉是唯一一首用中文填詞的歌曲，充分發揮了 OHHYUK 和國國以詩為詞的長才，在字詞間留白，讓聽眾有自由的詮釋空間。柔美的聲線與似夢的旋律消除了語言障礙，使所有人都能純粹的享受音樂。這首歌的 MV 由 Rafhoo 執導，許光漢和竇靖童主演。

專輯主打歌〈Glue〉精巧轉折的和弦行進與簡單浪漫的歌詞形成對比。MV 導演 DQM 認為這首歌體現了自然界蘊含的愛，特意到飛往柬埔寨拍攝場景，以樹木經年累月互相纏繞成一體的生命力表達大自然純粹的愛，為聽眾提供了奇妙的視覺享受。

〈Young Man〉以互為矛盾的概念差撞出火花，藉以呈現 HYUKOH 和落日飛車可能的下一樂章，進而勾勒仍不可視的未來樣貌。披著明亮樂觀的旋律，歌詞唱著生存、鬥爭和對未來的不確定性，高張力的對比傳達了對青春的告別。科幻風格的 MV 出自以 Balming Tiger〈SEXY NUKIM (feat. RM of BTS)〉和 RM〈Groin〉等 MV 作品聞名的 Pennacky 導演。

〈Do Nothing〉的 Bossa Nova 氛圍從國國錄製 demo 時就已定調。兩團都認為 Bossa Nova 是雙方最適合合作的樂風。落日飛車第一張錄音室專輯直接以 Bossa Nova 為名，HYUKOH則在上一張專輯 《through love》 中用自身美學詮釋了此樂風。〈Do Nothing〉是落日飛車在巡演期間，國國什麼都要忙著做的期間，所描繪出的平靜悠閒，什麼都不做的假日。

〈Aaaannnnteeeeennnaaaaaa〉舒緩、適合冥想的質地，來自最美好的意外。團員們偶然聽到好友 James Fouren 檢查混音時，將〈Antenna〉放慢一倍。讓一切都慢下來的引力，讓他們決定將這個體驗保留在專輯中。最後一曲〈2F 年轻人〉則毫無保留地印刻了所有成員真摯的魅力，將在加平郡錄音室二樓，所有人聚在一起嘗試錄下〈Young Man〉的四分多鐘，原封不動地保存下來。聆聽〈Aaaannnnteeeeennnaaaaaa〉和〈2F 年轻人〉，像是拆開驚喜的禮物般，穿過時空，置身在透過音樂，喜樂充盈的一刻。

AAA: the full-length album from HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster

HYUKOH (OHHYUK, HYUNJAE, INWOO, and DONGGEON along with the band’s close friend JNKYRD), are set to release their collaborative album 《AAA》, with the Taipei-based band Sunset Rollercoaster (Kuo-Hung Tseng, Hung-Li Chen, Shao-Hsuan Wang, Tsun-Lung Lo, and Hao-Ting Huang). The 8-track album is the culmination of monthly sessions with both bands beginning in May 2023 across South Korea in Gapyeong, Seoul, and Jeju Island.

《AAA》 is both bands’ first album release in four years. It combines the rich ensemble of HYUKOH’s musicians paired with the incomparable vocals of frontman OHHYUK with Sunset Rollercoater’s melodic romance that reminisces the warm climate of Taipei and their poetic lyrics admired by fans from various cultures. With 《AAA》, each band’s artistry and individual styles are heightened and in full bloom.

The beginning and long-time fond friendship

The bond between HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster, who hit their 10-year and 15-year debut album anniversary this year, respectively, goes a long way back, but their first collaboration started in early 2020 with a casual chat in Tokyo. HYUKOH was passing through the city while on tour for their album 《through love》 and Sunset Rollercoaster happened to be there working on their 3rd studio album. The casual chat led to OHHYUK’s feature on the Sunset Rollercoaster track 〈Candlelight〉 from their album 《Soft Storm》 and Sunset Rollercoaster’s remake version of 〈Help〉 from HYUKOH’s album 《through love》. The two tracks gave fans something to quench their thirst during the pandemic. Despite the limited circumstances, the two bands carried out the process effortlessly, which was possible via the respect and fondness HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster had for each other. Working on the two tracks together made them envision a broader collaboration. When Sunset Rollercoaster visited Seoul for a headline show in March 2023, the two bands met again and ensured their mutual desire to make more music together and devoted their undivided attention to the year-long journey of 《AAA》.

Making music together

In May 2023, HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster teamed up for a one-of-a-kind songcamp at Music Village 1939 in Gapyeong to kick off their musical collaborations. OHHYUK (from HYUKOH) would add the main melody to a demo created by Kuo-Hung Tseng (from Sunset Rollercoaster), and the two bands would work together to finish up the demos made by OHHYUK and Kuo. 〈Kite War〉 was the first track of the album recorded as an improvisational ensemble of the two bands in Gapyeong, and the last recorded track, 〈2F 年轻人〉, which was also recorded during the songcamp, reveals the essence of the joint creativity. The music video of 〈2F 年轻人〉 by DQM, sketches the joy of the members at the time in full.

A week-long trip commenced as the driving force to continue the collaborative music-making journey throughout Seoul, Jeju Island, and Gapyeong. These travels are the cornerstone of the styling direction of 《AAA》’s imagery, “A Troupe of Music Wanderers.”

During an interview with the Substack 'Tune Glue' in 2020, Kuo said “Music is about the relationship or connection between human beings, because music is definitely a language. It’s kind of a lower language—you don’t need to understand cultural stuff for music to touch people’s hearts.” Although their paths of life and native languages are different, 《AAA》 is the musical dialogue between HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster that caresses the tight bond built through numerous musical works and jam sessions together. This 《AAA》 dialogue will now be shared with audiences around the globe to explore.

The meaning of AAA

During the making, the musicians tentatively called the project 《AAA》 which eventually turned out to become the name of the album. 《AAA》 conveys many meanings. It was the name of the car insurance company that Sunset Rollercoaster took out during their first tour in the States, which adds a sense of security, and it is also the grading standard to evaluate qualified hotels and the best water quality. In one way, the cultural backgrounds of the members bring up the word “Asia,” but in another, the interpretation as an abbreviation of All Areas Access seems to blur all cultural boundaries. OHHYUK and Kuo briefly chatted about the meaning of 《AAA》 in a commentary video of the album and defined it as “something good” and “guaranteed quality.”

The 8 tracks

〈Kite War〉 was an improvisational track made during the first band session in Gapyeong. The song mostly consists of two chords and gives off a sort of old-school and earnest vibe. When describing this track, which acted as the catalyst for the creative collaboration of the two bands, Kuo said, “After jamming for about 5 minutes, I instantly knew that we would be able to finish the song.”

A demo saved in OHHYUK’s iPad in 2021 sprung to life as 〈Y〉. Repetitive verses are minimized with a linear structure, and the ambient formula somewhat adds a gospel touch to the track. 〈Y〉 is referred to as “the hidden favorite” as the track that all members chose as their best pick from the album.

〈Antenna〉 is the only track with lyrics written in Mandarin. It conveys the poetic writing styles of OHHYUK and Kuo, which are quite similar in that they conceal the clarity of the meanings and leave space for the listeners to make their own interpretations. The soft voice and dreamy melodic sequence melt down the language barrier of the lyrics, making it possible for all to enjoy. The music video for the track, directed by Rafhoo, stars Chinese artists Greg Hsu and Leah Dou.

The intricately intertwined complicated chords of the title song, 〈Glue〉 contrast to the simple yet romantic lyrics. DQM, the music video director, felt that the track unfolded the love embedded in mother nature and flew out to Cambodia to capture the scenes. The love symbolized by the vitality of the trees that have become whole by swaddling each other throughout the years offers the listeners a wondrous visual delicacy.

〈Young Man〉 envisions the next chapter of HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster or the future way beyond with a paradoxical twist. The bright and optimistic melody contradicts the lyrics about survival, fight, and uncertainty of the future as they say farewell to youth. The cheerful SF-like music video that features all members, was directed by Pennacky, who is well-known for his music video works like Balming Tiger’s 〈SEXY NUKIM (feat. RM of BTS)〉 and RM’s 〈Groin〉.

The bossa nova aura of 〈Do Nothing〉 started out as a demo by Kuo. Bossa nova was defined as the optimal genre for the two bands to work on together. It is the name of Sunset Rollercoaster’s first studio album and HYUKOH illustrated the genre in the latest album through love with their own aesthetics. Contrary to the tranquil melody of the track that pictures a peaceful and restful holiday, Kuo finished up 〈Do Nothing〉 while the band was on tour in China and very busy “doing” many things.

One day the members accidentally overheard the half-speed version of 〈Antenna〉 when their friend James Fouren was checking on the track mixing. They were all captivated by the slow and meditative sound and decided to include it as a track in the album named 〈Aaaannnnteeeeennnaaaaaa〉.

The unpolished candid charms of the last track, 〈2F 年轻人〉 were made when the members gathered up on the 2nd floor of the studio in Gapyeong and recorded a take of 〈Young Man〉. 〈Aaaannnnteeeeennnaaaaaa〉 and 〈2F 年轻人〉 are like two surprise tracks that sonically alter time and space with a dose of cheerfulness.
