Christian Poltéra, 1977 in Zürich geboren, erhielt Unterricht bei Nancy Chumachenco sowie Boris Pergamenschikow und studierte später bei Heinrich Schiff in Salzburg und Wien.
Als Solist arbeitet er mit führenden Orchestern zusammen wie z.B. dem Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, dem Los Angeles Philharmonic, den Münchner Philharmonikern, dem Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, dem BBC Symphony Orchestra, dem Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, dem Santa Cecilia Orchestra Rom, dem Chamber Orchestra of Europe, dem Orchestre de Paris, der Deutschen Kammerphilharmonie Bremen und der Camerata Salzburg. Dabei gehören Dirigenten wie Riccardo Chailly, Christoph von Dohnányi, Bernard Haitink, John Eliot Gardiner, Philippe Herreweghe, Paavo Järvi und Andris Nelsons zu seinen Partnern.
2004 wurde er mit dem Borletti-Buitoni Award ausgezeichnet und als BBC New Generation Artist ausgewählt.
Christian Poltéra widmet sich auch intensiv der Kammermusik mit Musikern wie Mitsuko Uchida, Christian Tetzlaff, Isabelle Faust, Leif Ove Andsnes, Kathryn Stott, Esther Hoppe, Ronald Brautigam, dem Zehetmair, Belcea, Auryn und dem Hagen Quartett.
Zusammen mit Frank Peter Zimmermann und Antoine Tamestit bildet er ein festes Streichtrio, das Trio Zimmermann, das in den bedeutenden Musikmetropolen zu Gast ist.
Ferner tritt er bei renommierten Festivals wie Salzburg, Luzern, Edinburgh, Berlin, Wien, Schleswig-Holstein und London (Proms) auf.
Seit 2013 ist Christian Poltéra künstlerischer Leiter der Kammermusiktage in der Bergkirche Büsingen.
Christian Poltéras zahlreiche Aufnahmen spiegeln sein vielseitiges Repertoire wider und sind vielfach ausgezeichnet worden (u.a. BBC Music Magazine Award, Gramophone Choice, Diapason d’Or de l’Année). Cellokonzerte von Dvorak, Haydn, Walton, Prokofiev, Schostakowitsch, Dutilleux, Lutosławski, Martinu und Ligeti gehören ebenso dazu wie Sonaten von Mendelssohn, Fauré und Brahms. Mit dem Trio Zimmermann hat er Einspielungen mit Werken von Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Hindemith und Schönberg vorgelegt.
Christian Poltéra ist Professor an der Hochschule Luzern. Er gibt regelmässig Meisterkurse und ist Juror an verschiedenen Cellowettbewerben, u.a. beim Internationalen Musikwettbewerb der ARD in München. Zudem hat er Urtext-Ausgaben für den Henle-Verlag herausgegeben.
Christian Poltéra spielt ein Violoncello von Antonio Casini aus dem Jahr 1675 und das berühmte „Mara“ Stradivari von 1711.
Six years after their acclaimed disc devoted to Mendelssohn’s works for cello and piano, Christian Poltéra and Ronald Brautigam now tackle the two cello sonatas by Johannes Brahms, two central works in the repertoire, unquestionably the most important since those by Beethoven.
The First Cello Sonata was composed between 1862 and 1865 when Brahms was in his thirties. He seemed intent on showcasing the lyricism of an instrument that is often compared to the human voice. Composed 24 years later, the Second Cello Sonata makes greater use of the cello’s range, particularly in the upper register. A common feature of these two sonatas is that the role of the piano is never secondary (Brahms was an excellent pianist) and the dialogue between the two instruments is both inexhaustible and complex.
The programme also includes the Fünf Stücke im Volkston (Five Pieces in Folk Style) by Robert Schumann, Brahms’s early mentor. Composed in Schumann’s late years, this short cycle reflects the composer’s taste for small, expressive pieces in, as the title suggests, a popular and accessible idiom. These miniatures draw their charm not only from the cello’s marvellous nuances but also from the ‘folk style’.
The three works gathered here date from Sergei Prokofiev's last years. Despite his declining health as well as the oppressive political climate, the composer could count on the support of great musicians, in particular the cellist Mstislav Rostropovitch. The relationship contributed to the writing of works for cello. The first was the Symphony-Concerto, an improved reworking of a much earlier cello concerto. As in all of Prokofiev's large-scale compositions, we find striking gestures of contrast and confrontation, disturbing juxtapositions of mood, powerful rhetoric followed by sudden passages of tender reflection. The Sonata for Cello solo is an unfinished work: a broad and eloquent Andante is heard here in the completion by Vladimir Blok. Finally, the solemn and poetic Sonata for Cello and Piano seems like an oasis of serenity in the midst of Soviet dictatorship. In a clear form devoid of anything that might have shocked the authorities, the work belongs to Prokofiev's best works thanks to it's wealth of melody, from beginning to end. Technical challenges are not absent, as demonstrated by the huge range of cello techniques. Performed by Christian Poltera, these three works bear witness to Prokofiev's creative vitality in the evening of his life, expressed in a simple, clear musical language linked to a new sense of vitality in the face of adversity.

Max Bruchs „Kol Nidrei“ gehört – neben dem populären 1. Violinkonzert – zu seinen berühmtesten Kompositionen. Das wehmütige „Adagio nach hebräischen Melodien“ entstand 1880 für den Cellisten Robert Hausmann. Es verarbeitet zwei alte jüdische Gesänge, deren außerordentliche Schönheit den Protestanten Bruch nach eigener Aussage tief bewegte. Der tenorale Celloklang ist das ideale Medium für die Stimme eines jüdischen Kantors, und so liefert „Kol Nidrei“ bis heute jedem Cellisten eine wunderbare Vorlage für das „Singen“ auf dem Instrument. Mit dieser auf der Erstausgabe von 1881 basierenden Edition erscheint „Kol Nidrei“ erstmals in einer wissenschaftlich fundierten Urtextausgabe, wofür neben den musikalischen Quellen auch zahlreiche Briefe und Dokumente aus dem Max-Bruch-Archiv herangezogen wurden. Für die Bezeichnung der Solostimme konnte Christian Poltéra gewonnen werden. - Violinsonate A-dur Urtextausgabe, Fassung für Violoncello, broschiert mit bezeichneter und unbezeichneter Streicherstimme
Im Gegensatz zu anderen seiner Spätwerke wurde Francks 1886 komponierte Violinsonate (HN 293) von Anfang an bei Publikum und Kritik freundlich aufgenommen. Unter den zahlreichen Bearbeitungen hebt sich die im Januar 1888 erschienene klangschöne Fassung für Violoncello insofern hervor, als sie ausdrücklich von Franck autorisiert wurde. Der Cellist Jules Delsart, der im Dezember 1887 in Paris eine Aufführung der Sonate erlebt hatte, war so begeistert, dass er Franck um die Erlaubnis zur Transkription der Violinstimme für sein Instrument bat. Delsart hielt sich eng an das Original, ließ den Klavierpart unverändert und transponierte den Violinpart nur wo nötig und passend in die tiefere Lage.

Bei den ersten Aufführungen der zwischen 1920 und 1922 entstandenen Sonate zeigten sich selbst enge Freunde des Komponisten verstört: Nach dem Klangrausch von La Valse wirkte die reduzierte Besetzung und moderne Klangsprache der Sonate wie ein Schock. Das zukunftsweisende Werk ist jedoch inzwischen vom Konzertpodium nicht mehr wegzudenken. Als praxisnahe Hilfestellung für die Interpreten bringen wir für beide Instrumente jeweils eine Spielpartitur, in der die Stimme des anderen Instrumentes mitläuft. Beide Stimmen sind sowohl unbezeichnet als auch bezeichnet enthalten. Für den Fingersatz konnten die weltberühmten Instrumentalisten Christian Poltéra und Frank Peter Zimmermann gewonnen werden.
