Tech Horizons: Building AI Skills and Confidence in Panamaโ€™s Youth
From the heart of Panama to the Indigenous communities in Panama Oeste and Embera comarca, the Tech Horizons program gave learners a guided introduction to AI and programming. The IEEE Panama Section and IEEE Computer Society Panama Chapter partnered with the Universidad Tecnolรณgica de Panama (UTP) to build a simple yet powerful program that ran from September 27, 2025, to December 13, 2025. The driving principle behind Tech Horizons was straightforward: Access to high-quality tech education and digital literacy shouldnโ€™t depend on where someone lives or their background.A Program Built for Maximum ImpactTech Horizons was inspired by a core element of IEEE Computer Societyโ€™s vision: Play a leading role in providing tech information and community services to the worldโ€™s computing professionals. Powered by the IEEE CS Broadening Participation Fund, the program hyper-focused on creating impactful, authentic learning opportunities.Tech Horizons succeeded in helping participants experience the potential of innovation using a multi-pronged approach: 21 virtual sessions, conducted between October and December 2025, taught and reinforced skill-building and the power of mentorship. Two in-person events held on October 25 and November 22 gave learners the chance to apply their knowledge in hands-on activities. They also reinforced the importance of community empowerment and motivating participants to continue innovating. Ongoing mentor support via regular check-ins, with each mentor assigned to support participants as the program progresses. A WhatsApp-based communication system that connected participants, mentors, and families to keep track of attendance and foster real-time coordination. The program gave 30 participants from a range of towns and villages the chance to learn together and collaborate. Given the diverse mix of students, itโ€™s unlikely they wouldโ€™ve crossed paths otherwise. Students hailed from 10th through 12th grade classrooms from private and public schools spanning: Panamรก Centro Panamรก Oeste San Miguelito Panamรก Norte Chiriquรญ Comarca Emberรก Tech Horizonsโ€ฆ

TechMovel: Expanding Digital Access in Brazil
Where you live shouldnโ€™t determine your digital literacy. For many rural, Indigenous, and Quilombola communities in Brazil, that hasnโ€™t been the case. Distance from urban centers can mean limited exposure to digital tools and computing education. TechMovel, a project sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, took a huge step towards righting that wrong through community empowerment.TechMovel is a mobile classroom that epitomizes how the IEEE Computer Societyโ€™s community-driven technology model can deliver real-world impact through tech inclusion.The Need for Digital Literacy for Under-Resourced CommunitiesAcross the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, many communities have limited access to digital education. Physical distance from cities reduces learning opportunities, especially when it comes to programming and developing the digital literacy needed in modern education and employment.TechMรณvel addressed this gap by targeting computing and internet skills in remote areas of Brazil. It created a portable classroom capable of traveling to remote communities. Rather than asking learners to traverse long distances, the program brought workshops directly to Indigenous villages and Quilombola communities.Communities reached included: Lagoa do Taparรก Indigenous Community Amarelรฃo Indigenous Community Potiguara Indigenous communities Quilombola communities of Traรญras and Capoeiras Rural communities such as Riacho do Sangue These visits created unique opportunities for participants to encounter technology in a practical learning environment designed to be both relevant and culturally respectful.Workshop Design and ExpansionAs part of IEEE CS's tech inclusion initiative, the project was led by volunteers from the IEEE Computer Society UFRN Student Branch Chapter. This is a multidisciplinary group of university students and mentors, all committed to expanding computing education through community empowerment.The volunteer team consisted of about 30 students from diverse academic backgrounds such as computer science, engineering, education, and aerospace engineering. They worked together to build a flexible workshop structure that met the needs of learners of all ages.The programโ€™sโ€ฆ
