thoughts on the new album:
it's different. very different than anything they've done before, but if it wasn't different, it wouldn't be 311. "don't tread on me" has a very different overall sound than any of their other albums, but so did self titled, so did soundsystem, etc. making the same music over and over is boring. they like to experiment with their music, as most real artists do. they are incredibly talented and know how to adapt to the changing tastes of their fans. and even though everyone thinks that they wanted another album that sounded like something else they've done, i know that when that album of the same stuff came out, people would criticize it anyway.
i know a lot of people don't really dig this album. a lot of people say it sucks. but i say, if you like evolver, how can you not like this album. i personally hated evolver. i want to crack that cd in half and pretend it never existed. i listened to it twice when it came out and hated it so much i lost the cd. for me to hate a 311 cd is big news, cause prior to this there was nothing of theirs i didn't like. i was disappointed that i hated it so much, but what could i do. i was given a burned copy a few months ago and tried to listen to it again, but once again, i just hated it too much. but i won't sit here and say it sucks. instead i'll say i don't like it. "don't tread on me" is a thousand times better.
lyrically i think this album is genious. some of the things they say in relation to the world today totally crack me up. musically they have some awesome melodies and harmonies. some of the lines and chords they come out with don't really do it for me but overall i think it's great. it sounds like they had a lot of fun producing this album and i like it a lot. it may never be on the pedestal that "sound system" or "music" is on, but you never know.
