Completed the entire Guide, very informative in the honest way it was presented. Not favoring any specific denomination but gave honest timelines of mainstream and how the end results were accomplished. Explains upfront the reasons certain denominations were not included and the specific reasons why. The explanations as to why there are so many, however, a base fact is alluded to all (I will not divulge the base fact) and gives a large base of information on number of congregations, members, and websites. To be more informed this is a very good source for research. Highly recommended for the beginner and the experienced.

This book has much information regarding many different religions and their beliefs. I had hoped it had more information regarding which denominations split into others, which later merged together, and why.

While this is not necessarily a book I read from beginning to end, I find it infinitely useful as I traverse various faiths and it helps me narrow down their core values. Well written, concise, and informative.

I would give this 5 stars but...this excludes what the author considers cults. Which is Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses. I recently have taken a position with a hospice agency and needed to learn more about Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses because I am working with patients of these religions or cults if you will. I was disappointed to find this did not include the 2 I really needed to learn about. However the rest of the book is very informative and useful.

The book came in great condition and right on time. The book itself is very thorough and I would recommend this to anyone looking to learn more about other denominations or if you are trying to find a new kind of church home.

I like the unbiased approach, this is only boring if don’t really want to know the different denominations. It’s a very informative book.

As Christ told His apostles in Matthew 16:18 the gates of hell would never prevail against His church and of course it hasn't! Ron Rhodes does an excellent job in giving the history of the church and how it grew from a universal catholic church (catholic with a small c), to the Reformation, to today's denominations.

The one thing that strikes me in reading Dr. Rhode's book is that all branches of Christianity agree on the essentials of the faith. Yes, they are disagreements on the non-essentials (the reason for all the denominations), but in essentials we have unity.

One distinctive characteristic of the book is that Mr. Rhodes only includes true Christian denominations. You will notice that he excludes the likes of Oneness Pentecostals, Mormons, and Jehovah's Witnesses. In other books on Christian denominations you will see these cultic groups included.

One critique I have of the book is that Mr. Rhodes seems to present the pre-mill dispensational rapture view as if it were the one true view. You will notice how he lists this view several times and lets it stand alone, as compared to placing it alongside other views in a chart (e.g. partial preterism, or progressive dispensationalism, which are never even mentioned in his book).

Overall though this is a must book for those who love the history of the church!

found this book great! good insight, but is very america focused! but still great!

I was attracted to it for being the only real book out there about this subject! Its a pitty we have so many denominations, but this book sheds light on the reasons why we do.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Source of Information For Church History Distinctions
Reviewed in Canada on April 1, 2020
I had just gotten this book in, and before I even read it, I was browsing the index page, and its clearly obvious half the churches Ron Rhodes lists in his index have nothing to do with christian churches but everything to do with Non Trinitarian Cults. Just be aware of this when buying this book. Its good for general church history information, but for systematic theology regarding christian church doctrine, this is not the book to go to.

  • 1.0 out of 5 stars Basic, Repetitive and Disappointing
Reviewed in Canada on April 9, 2012
I was hoping for something that would help me understand the differences between Christian denominations so that I would feel more comfortable visiting different churches and have a better idea of which ones would fit my personality best. For that goal, this guide was pretty much useless.

First, it is very strongly American, which would have been nice to know upfront. It gives basic beliefs of major denominations and church groups within the denomination, but only the American ones (unless they happen to be international). Since I live in Canada, the practical use to me is marginal at best just from this first fact. I also didn't like the way the author sometimes let patriotism flavour his writing.

The history portions were good for an introduction, but far too short to be really useful.

The belief portions were incredibly repetitive. Logically, in order to be selected as a CHRISTIAN denomination, the author chose denominations that share the core Christian beliefs. But to re-state them for each and every entry is boring and uninformative. Of course they all believe that the Bible is core to the Christian faith! Of course they all believe that Jesus was the son of God and died and rose again for man's sins! Of course they all believe that humankind is sinful! It would have been much less tedious if the author had simply said, "Assume these things to be true of every entry, unless stated otherwise." There might have been marginal differences in how a group viewed the Trinity, or man's condition, or the end times, but not enough to justify pages and pages of the same information.

The author also obviously let his own faith colour his writing. I wanted a book that was written from an academic and professional perspective, not one written specifically with Christians in mind.

This book would better have been called, "The Concise and Basic Guide to American Christian Denominations."
