Apartments.com is now fronted by Akamai's anti-bot protection at the CDN/TLS layer. The block applies before any HTML is served — every request returns a 403 "Access Denied" page regardless of user-agent, residential proxy rotation, or Playwright stealth. The block lives in their ASN-reputation + JA3-fingerprint layer, which can't be bypassed by ordinary scraping infrastructure.
We considered wiring in a paid unlocker service (ScrapingBee, Bright Data Web Unlocker) but determined the per-listing economics didn't support the additional cost at the current paying-user volume. If we revisit this decision later, this actor will be restored.

Apartments.com is part of CoStar Group, a $25B real-estate data company with significant infrastructure investment in protecting their listings from competitors. The anti-bot stack applies at three layers:
- CDN edge — Akamai's bot manager rejects requests at the TLS handshake based on JA3 fingerprint + ASN reputation
- Cookie / fingerprint — even successful TLS sessions are checked against browser fingerprint patterns
- Behavioral — request timing, mouse movement, and scroll patterns are profiled
This stack is consistent with what Indeed, Upwork, and Fiverr deploy. Generic Playwright + residential proxy is insufficient. Real-world solutions require specialized stealth tooling (anti-detect browsers, residential CAPTCHA solvers) or commercial unlocker services billing $50-500/month minimum.
