Hi I'm an au pair in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, from September 2013 - May 2014 and was just wondering if there are any other au pairs nearby? Or if there are any au pairs who would like to meet up in mutual places like Pamplona, Madrid etc. Also, is there anyone out there who could give me advice on how to ask my host family to buy more fruit/veg? Not saying a lot, just that at the minute, the majority of the food I have been eating has been processed food and I have never been a food snob before (ever!) but the lack of nutrition in my diet is starting to show physically and mentally :( so any advice on how to ask them for a bit of healthier grub? Thanks!

Hello, I'm an au-pair in Ireland, I've been here since March and luckily I'm pretty happy with my family.

But now my host family just told me that they are going on holidays for two weeks in August and I'm like... What about me?I tried talking with the au-pair that was here before me or the ones around me right now, but none of them have seen themsekves with this problem and I don't know what to do.

What am I suppossed to do in those two weeks?

Do they think that I'll be going back home (I think she thinks I am, but it's way too expensive, and I've told her)? Will I get paid during those two weeks? Can I stay int he house? What about food?

I should ask but I don't know how to start that conversation? What if she tells me that I won't get paid those two weeks or that I can't stay in the house?

Hi :)

I've been lucky enough to find an au pair family and I'm going to live with them from August 25th (excited!!) 

I've been looking a bit into language courses, but I don't really need English courses to be honest. I know my English isn't a 100 % perfect, but I consider myself rather fluent in English. So, I looked into German and Spanish courses, but as much as I'd like to improve my German and Spanish, I'd also like to get to know other au pairs - and I probably won't find them going to German and Spanish courses! (The fact that language courses are insanely expensive is irrelevant right now).

Today, I stumbled upon this community, and though it may be a long shot, I thought that there may be someone in this community who's also going to Newcastle upon Tyne, or someone who's already there!

Hi, I'm Syd. 22 year old girl from Spain.

I've been considering taking a break from my studies for a year (I'm finishing University now, and want to wait a bit to start the project).

I wanted to work as an aupair because I love kids and it would be an amazing way to improve my spoken english.

I was thikning about going somewhere in the UK, but I don't really know how to go about this. I've been looking at some agencies but obviously, how do I know which one is best? That's why I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.

I have experience with kids, so that's not a problem.

I am a 26 year-old from Russia and want to work as an Au-Pair to the United States. Just wanted to ask whether it's true that you have to have an educational degree and at least 6 monts driving history to get a visa or it's a false information?

Is it possible for me to get a job?

Hello all

I've got two questions that hopefully someone can answer.

1. Is it allowed to au pair for more than one family during your stay? Not at the same time, of course- rather, could you au pair for one family for, say, 3 months, and then go au pair for a second family for a longer period of time?

I'm looking to au pair in France and have had offers from multiple families for different lengths of time so I was wondering if this was possible. I've looked on numerous au pair sites and haven't been able to find any information on this.

2. Long stay visas for au pairs in France are meant for one year, but I've read that they can be extended. Is this true? Has anyone ever done this?

(PS- I'm American, if that makes a difference to anyone's answer.)

Hello everyone!

I am an American and am looking to au pair in France. I've only just begun my search for an agency and feel pretty overwhelmed. I'm hoping some of you might be able to answer a few general questions.

1. What agencies have you all used?? I've found some very specific ones on UFAAP's site, but then there's also the larger ones like GreatAuPair. Any recommendations?
2. How likely is it to be able to au pair in a specific location in the country?
3. Just out of curiosity, about how long did it take for you to get everything set up, from joining an agency to finding a family to actually going there?

Hello, everyone!

A while ago I've accepted a position in Valencia (Spain) for 5-6 weeks and I'm going in 2 weeks. My job is to look after the kids (boy and girl, 7 and 5 years old) when the parents are at work (7:30-15:00) and keep my room and their room in order; afternoons and weekends are ''mine''.
I'm super excited, but also a bit nervous, so I'd appreciate any tips/advice you have.

I have a few questions:
  • PACKING - What to take? I have no idea what I should bring with me. I guess clothes (how many, though?), laptop, phone, camera, iPod, make up and this is where my ideas end, lol. I have never been away from home for more than 1 week, so I'm not sure what I'll need. Maybe something specific, considering I'm going as an au pair?
  • ACTIVITIES - Do you have any suggestions how I could spend the time with the kids when the parents are at work, besides going out etc.? I speak Spanish and I'll speak Spanish to the whole family, but they mentioned that they would like the kids to start getting familiar with English (although they are not very excited about that), so I thought I could maybe include English in some of the games or something. I have yet to figure out how, though.
  • ANYTHING ELSE THAT I HAVEN'T MENTIONED HERE BUT IT'S IMPORTANT - I honestly don't even know what should I know to be prepared.

I'm going to Paris to study at Université Paris Sorbonne-Paris IV from early Sept to Dec. My pre-enrollment is done. However, I don't know if I should apply for a student, au pair, or try to get a regular working visa. The problem has to do with the fact that I'll need some way to make money while I'm there, but I doubt I'll be able to find a family to take me for just one semester. Most of the families I've see online want someone for no less than a full year and a lot of agencies I've spoken with are saying the same thing. I have plans after going to Paris, so staying for a year isn't an option.

-I've considered applying for a student visa, but I heard that you can't accept work until you get a 'carte de sejour' which they won't give you until you've been there for 2-3 months. (Again, almost the entire time I'm going to be there for.) Is it possible to apply for this when you first arrive, but work while it's being processed?

-I heard about people doing private English lessons as a way to make money. Is this viable? Would I make enough to cover groceries, metro card, etc doing something like this? Is the French Gov going to bust me for it?

-My permanent address is in Louisiana, but I'm currently on an internship in L.A. Would it be possible for me to get my visa from the L.A. office, or do I need to go to the Louisiana one? Also, can I apply for my Visa via mail?

Hey everyone, I am currently working as an au pair in France, and I'm debating on working for the family again, or trying to find a job and get my own place. My problem is the visa. If I have a student visa that is good until the beginning of the fall, is it possible for me to change or extend it into a working visa? I've heard one has three months past the visa date to leave the country. I've also heard to change the visa, it is necessary to fly back to the US and reapply, true/false? If I show up at some job with a student visa, are they going to tell me 'oh, well we can't hire you, it's just a student visa and you're only allowed to work _____ hours'? Or, if I am hired someplace, will I be allowed to stay after getting employment?

What happens if I stay in France past when the visa is valid? Honestly, I'm scared to ask the actual French consulate/visa people. But, if any of you can provide some insight or maybe experiences with those questions, please let me know. It would be greatly, greatly appreciated as I have to make this decision soon and there don't seem to be a lot of solid answers! Merci d'avance!

 Hi there, this is a somewhat specific question about French visa requirements.  Hope that's ok here, it's somewhat pressing and I'm not sure who else to ask.  I am going to be au pairing in France, and I'm going to the French consulate in Chicago to apply for my visa on Monday.  I finally got my stamped contract back from the DDTEFP/French labor department, one of the key pieces needed to apply for the visa, but there is no mention of the language course that an au pair is required to take....for some reason, I thought this was going to be included.  One of the requirements needed for the au pair visa is "proof of registration or enrollment in a language school specifying exact dates of attendance"...I just realized I don't know if I have this.  I wasn't necessarily planning to take this course since I spent a semester at a French university already and will be going to a university part time while I'm there anyway, but regardless the au pair family had to sign me up for it.  Does anyone know if photocopies of a French student ID at this university, and possibly a photocopy of this letter of enrollment in the language school I was signed up for (the family I'm au pairing for obtained both) would suffice?  Would I possibly be able to still go to the consulate, present everything else I have, then have the physical "proof of enrollment" letter mailed to the consulate?  Will the fact I've studied in France/speak pretty decent French matter at all? Is there any other possible option or am I going to have to wait yet again for a piece of paper to be mailed to me before I can apply for the visa?  The consulate is pretty hard to get ahold of by phone, and well, at all.  Hoping someone might be able to provide some useful information.  If it helps at all, here's the consul page listing the visa requirements. My name is Kirsten and I am considering becoming an au pair in the next year. But I am having trouble deciding which country to au pair in. I am trying to choose between France or Italy. I have been a nanny in the U.S. for about a year officially but have been in childcare since I was in middle school. I was wondering if any of you have advice or some input on what countries differences are. Which country is easier with traveling around Europe? Also the family differences, noticing the culture contrasts. And which countries tend to speak more english. Thank you for your help!
