I'm pretty sure we've done this or something like it a (really long) while back.
If you could form a fantasy band, whom would you choose for each instrument, why, and what would the band sound like?
I would pick: First and foremost, Devin Townsend (Devin Townsend Band, Strapping Young Lad) is the frontman. He would sing and play rhythm guitar. In my opinion, he has the perfect voice for heavy music, and this band is going to be heavy. His clean tones are surprisingly beautiful once you hear how hellishly he can scream and yell. His chunky rhythm guitar will come in handy, plus he can do some really cool lead stuff. On top of all that, he will be the producer and engineer of my fantasy band (no one can produce a heavy metal album quite like he can).
For drums, I would like Morgan Rose (Sevendust). As far as technique goes, I'm sure there are a thousand better drummers to go with. On the other hand, Morgan has a power and presence that few drummers can match. Watch a video of him playing, and you will see what I mean. Morgan does most of the yelling and screaming in his band, Sevendust, and he has an excellent voice for this. Having both Morgan and HevyDevy available for screaming would be great, and I think their voices in the same band leave the opportunity for excellent resources of anger. Both Morgan's drumming and his voice could contribute greatly.
The lead guitar spot is one that I find hard to fill. There are so many choices, but I have to go with John Petrucci (Dream Theater). He is my favorite player because of his amazing diversity. He's proven that he can play pretty much any genre (from metal to jazz to classical and everything in between) with ease. His technical abilities along with his creative input will be crucial to this band. Whether it's just a rhythm line or a crazy lead, everything John plays is top notch.
As far has who plays bass...well, I don't know of many bass players that stand out in the metal genre. Instead of trying to think of a person, I was thinking: what band has a bassist that stands out from the rest? For some reason, Dark New Day came to mind. Their bassist just always sounds really good to me. So I went to the website to find out who it was, and it's no surprise that it's Corey Lowry, brother of Clint Lowry (ex-Sevendust). Clint left Sevendust to start Dark New Day with his brother (I was unaware that his brother was the bassist until now). As far as musicianship goes, if he's anything like his brother, Clint, then there should be no problem in this group of superhumans (lol). And by the way, If Devin ever decided that he no longer wanted to be the 2nd guitarist, Clint would be his replacement.
A lot of you will probably say that I should stop here, but I really think this band could use some keys. Now that I think of it, the way I want the keys to sound would be similar to the Devin Townsend Band. So, I looked up his keyboard player, Dave Young. He sounds the way I want the keys to sound, so he's the obvious choice.
The band shall be called Mesentery. In anatomy, the mesentery most commonly refers to the tissue that connects the small intestines to the back of the abdominal wall. Since really loud, powerful music can shake your bowels, you will be thankful for your mesentery when you listen to this band. That is why I would like to call this band Mesentery. Not really. I just think the name Mesentery sounds cool.
Your responses don't have to be (but are welcome to be) as complicated as my post. But that's my fantasy band right there. Thoughts? Suggestions? Criticism? Ridicule? Just reply.
