On CDs that kick ass [05 Jun 2007|09:19pm]

Today, I picked up two CDs...sorta. One was a legal pick-up...and the other, well not so much. The purchased CD was none other than Dream Theater's Systematic Chaos, which, by the way, kicks some major ass. The illegal copied CD I got today is Devin Townsend's newest release: Ziltoid the Omniscient. Quite hilarious but quite kickass at the same time. Both CDs are incredibly amazing, and I recommend both. I plan on purchasing Ziltoid eventually because it's definitely worth the money.

I also found a couple funny videos of Devin Townsend explaining gear and such on youtube. He also does some amazing guitar wanking...which was not exactly expected of him. He's got some serious chops.

If anyone wants more details about either release...summaries, reviews, etc. then let me know.

Other new editions to my CD library include Killswitch Engage's Alive Or Just Breathing as well as their newest, As Daylight Dies. Both CDs rock pretty fucking hard, so I decided to buy their only DVD release so far. I wouldn't have expected KsE to be so tight live. But they are great. Definitely some great music with a great live show. Rockin' band.

Also, I recently bought Meshuggah's Catch Thirtythree. This CD will rock your face off. It's incredibly technical, very typical of Meshuggah. But it's some of the heaviest music I've ever heard. Definitely worth a listen for fans of heavy music.

What's everyone else been listening to recently?

Need metal bands to listen to!!! [12 Mar 2007|04:51pm]

So...I need to find some good metal bands to listen to. I'm really into Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend, but I want to expand my interests a bit. I've tried searching for other metal bands, but I can't seem to find any that really appeal to me.

I like complicated shit like Dream Theater and Meshuggah.
I love Devin Townsend's vocals.
I love stuff that's incredibly heavy but still melodic.
I also like female vocalists (Simone Simons of Epica)
I dig the symphonic shit...but most symphonic metal bands are too strictly symphonic metal - in other words they don't pack the same kind of punch that a band like SYL does.

I like some of Kamelot's stuff, some Epica, some Lamb of God, some Meshuggah, but none of these bands would be able to find much play time in my CD player.

So I guess basically, I'm looking for a band that combines elements from many sub-genres of metal. I love ambient shit, symphonic shit, soaring vocals, intense drumming, melodic lines, sick guitar leads, songs that are synth-heavy, etc. Does anybody in this community know where I should start my search?

So far, the most promsing band I've found is called Agalloch.

Also, if anybody has any recommendations as far as mellower ambient music goes, I'd love to hear some suggestions.

Out of curiousity... [Also, when you answer, please give reasons as to why.]

What is the best album/s you've heard recently?

What is the worst album/s you've heard recently?

What album/s do you love but have a difficult time listening to often?

For me...
Best: Massive Attack || Mezzanine. That album has to be the sexiest album I've ever heard.

Worst: Alright, so it isnt new, but while I enjoy the band Our Lady Peace greatly... I did not enjoy their album "Happiness... Is Not a Fish That You Can Catch." First off, the album title is a bit too long for my liking. But to me, the album was not something that represented the band well. Each song seemed to sound a bit alike and really, off the album, I only liked One Man Army and Lying Awake. so... two songs out of eleven. Not that promising.

Love but cant listen to: Dragonforce || Inhuman Rampage. When I listen to it, I enjoy it... But I try to keep my listening time to a minimum, simply because I quickly grow weary of their style. I like their style, and they amuse me greatly. But they arent a band that I can listen to their album all the way through, nor listen to it more than like... once every couple of weeks.

So now. Share your best, worst, and liked but rejected albums. :)

Fantasy band [04 Jul 2006|06:58pm]

I'm pretty sure we've done this or something like it a (really long) while back.

If you could form a fantasy band, whom would you choose for each instrument, why, and what would the band sound like?

I would pick:
First and foremost, Devin Townsend (Devin Townsend Band, Strapping Young Lad) is the frontman. He would sing and play rhythm guitar. In my opinion, he has the perfect voice for heavy music, and this band is going to be heavy. His clean tones are surprisingly beautiful once you hear how hellishly he can scream and yell. His chunky rhythm guitar will come in handy, plus he can do some really cool lead stuff. On top of all that, he will be the producer and engineer of my fantasy band (no one can produce a heavy metal album quite like he can).

For drums, I would like Morgan Rose (Sevendust). As far as technique goes, I'm sure there are a thousand better drummers to go with. On the other hand, Morgan has a power and presence that few drummers can match. Watch a video of him playing, and you will see what I mean. Morgan does most of the yelling and screaming in his band, Sevendust, and he has an excellent voice for this. Having both Morgan and HevyDevy available for screaming would be great, and I think their voices in the same band leave the opportunity for excellent resources of anger. Both Morgan's drumming and his voice could contribute greatly.

The lead guitar spot is one that I find hard to fill. There are so many choices, but I have to go with John Petrucci (Dream Theater). He is my favorite player because of his amazing diversity. He's proven that he can play pretty much any genre (from metal to jazz to classical and everything in between) with ease. His technical abilities along with his creative input will be crucial to this band. Whether it's just a rhythm line or a crazy lead, everything John plays is top notch.

As far has who plays bass...well, I don't know of many bass players that stand out in the metal genre. Instead of trying to think of a person, I was thinking: what band has a bassist that stands out from the rest? For some reason, Dark New Day came to mind. Their bassist just always sounds really good to me. So I went to the website to find out who it was, and it's no surprise that it's Corey Lowry, brother of Clint Lowry (ex-Sevendust). Clint left Sevendust to start Dark New Day with his brother (I was unaware that his brother was the bassist until now). As far as musicianship goes, if he's anything like his brother, Clint, then there should be no problem in this group of superhumans (lol). And by the way, If Devin ever decided that he no longer wanted to be the 2nd guitarist, Clint would be his replacement.

A lot of you will probably say that I should stop here, but I really think this band could use some keys. Now that I think of it, the way I want the keys to sound would be similar to the Devin Townsend Band. So, I looked up his keyboard player, Dave Young. He sounds the way I want the keys to sound, so he's the obvious choice.

The band shall be called Mesentery. In anatomy, the mesentery most commonly refers to the tissue that connects the small intestines to the back of the abdominal wall. Since really loud, powerful music can shake your bowels, you will be thankful for your mesentery when you listen to this band. That is why I would like to call this band Mesentery.
Not really. I just think the name Mesentery sounds cool.

Your responses don't have to be (but are welcome to be) as complicated as my post. But that's my fantasy band right there. Thoughts? Suggestions? Criticism? Ridicule? Just reply.

Musicbrainz is a music database, think wikipedia meets AMG, just better because it's reviewed by you and allows connections. And what's more, it's free as in freedom.

I figured you might not know (like I didn't until some time ago) and might like to join the effort.
