Hey everyone! I'm a new dancer from Melbourne, Australia. I've been learning what I can from DVD's, but I'm going to be starting my first class later this year, probably at Underbelly unless I find something ATS/ITS or tribal fusion around the northern suburbs.

One of my largest hurdles is going to be stretching out my muscles and loosening up. I have been sedentary for my very long time and my muscles are all shortened, fatigued and tense. Yoga is helping, and I am seeing a osteo and massage therapist as often as I can afford to help correct my musculoskeletal imbalances and improve my muscle tone. I'd really love to become good at bellydance and perhaps preform one day. I used to preform jazz, tap and ballet when I was younger and I do miss it.

Anyway, I just wanted to say Hi! Any other dancers from Melbourne, here?

We are excited to be bringing you a weekend of tribal style bellydance workshops in early 2010. Hilary Cinis is one of Sydney's most sought after tribal fusion and contemporary bellydance artists and she will be in Brisbane on January 16/17. Hilary will be offering four diverse workshops catering for all dancers from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels.

Contemporary bellydance - 2 hours

Level: Open

In this workshop you will learn a short choreography and improvisation basics of the newest sub-genre of belly dance that fuses tribal belly, cabaret and modern dances. You will also learn moves from Hilary's own fusion repertoire with influences from Urban tribal Dance Company (USA), who are renowned for pushing the boundaries of tribal fusion belly dance. This style is lyrical, innovative and hypnotic and suitable for non-belly dancers.

Tribal fusion combos - 1.5 hours

Level: Open

Learn a short tribal fusion choreography full of combos and moves you can plug into your own dance pieces.

Tribal arms, posture and using "slowness" - 2 hours

Level: Open

Tribal is known for it's strong arms and posture. In this workshop we will work on improving arms and posture through body awareness using signature tribal and tribal fusion moves

Tribal stunts - 1.5 hours

Level: Very Advanced, for all bellydancers, not just tribal.

Learn floorwork moves, how to execute backbend and turkish drops properly. Please bring knee pads and a yoga mat. Not suitable for anyone with knee, hip or back weakness/injury. High level of flexibility and strength required.

All enquiries, please email bookings@opalesquedance.com - see www.opalesquedance.com for more details

And I have found a couple of ghawazee-style jackets!
One in fire-engine-red velvet, one in chocolate coloured velvet, and one plain black cotton lycra.
There are more being unearthed, including some one of a kind colours, so watch this space!

What do you think is a good name for a belly dance class this is casual, weekly, welcoming, fun, playful and spiritual and all women?
Something easy to say, I love the Arabic but I want to be easy to remember.

The class is for beginers and tryitouters, term classes will come from this for those who want to take it further, for this class I want to create an open, fun, accessable and spiritual, kind of a weekly halfa/moving meditation/discussion group/girlie playtime thing.
Discuss.

Hello,

I've just moved from Sydney to Mulwala / Yarrawonga. I've been dancing for 8 years with the Newtown Middle Eastern Dance School (mainly cabaret) and I am looking for a dance group / troupe in the nearby area. (Happy to drive for a bit to get there.)

Google hasn't been hugely helpful, does anyone know of any groups / teacher in the Albury / Rutherglen area?

Cheers,

Emma

I'm finding all sorts of clothing to be put up for sale!

Like a bustle belt sample, the tattoo pants shown in the picture above, black and cream lace-ruffled pants,
brown and black lace pants and harlequin skirts in blue/purple and orange/red!

These are all at reduced prices, and most of them are one-offs - you won't find them again!
Limited sizing only, so if you see it, snag it!
Up next - velvet ghawazee jackets!

After finding out earlier this year that I am pregnant, and suddenly realising that I am going to have to clean up my sewing room to make way for new baby, I have decided to put up some of my off-the-rack stock up on LJ to get rid of it.
Please note: This is not the custom sizing stuff - that is still available on my Etsy store - this is stuff that I have made for stalls and markets, and is now taking up too much space.
Most are reduced by significant amounts. I have a range of sizes (from M to 4xl at the moment)and styles, and I will be adding more as I can photograph them.
At the moment, I have more of my regular styles up for sale, but samples and unusual fabrics will be up very soon, so keep your eyes out. ;)
Click here to see all the tops!
Click here to see the pants!
Limited Edition stuff here!

If you are interested in anything, PM me or comment, and we can arrange it from there.
Terms, conditions and postage can be seen here.

Thanks for looking!

Tonight I went to my first ever bellydance class - for those who don't know I have been living in Thailand for the past 15 months, where there are next to no bellydance teachers, so when I discovered this wonderful thing that is bellydance, I was only able to study from DVDs. But I moved home to Melbourne last week, and so tonight went to my first ever class at Underbelly.

It was fantastic. I really cannot say enough nice things about this dance school. I did the Level 1 class with Andrea, and she is such a darling, so sweet and fun and such a great teacher. I live in the North-eastern suburbs so Underbelly, in Fitzroy, is about a 45 minute drive from my house. But is is so, so worth it. I would encourage every one of you in Melbourne and the surrounding area, even if you already have a great teacher, make the trip into Fitzroy at least once and drop in on a class, the place is fantastic and has such a great energy, and I can't wait to continue learning there.

So.... the Sydney Middle Eastern Festival is on this weekend. This is my first ever trip to any kind of workshop (other than ones held at our local school), so I'm rather excited and rather nervous. But looking forward to it none-the-less. Is anyone else going? What's the general consensus on these big festival things? Is it worth the time/money?

Hi everyone. My name is Gemma... nice to meet you! I am a 21 year old bellydance enthusiast based in Gladstone, Queensland. I have been dancing for about 9 months now; I started lessons when I was living in Townsville, at Scimtar Moon Belly Dance centre with a fantastic teacher named Cara and I've loved it ever since. I am soon starting lessons again here with another terrific teacher named Melanie. I can't wait! I have also read a book called Belly Dancing for Fitness by Rania (I haven't seen her videos, which I have heard are a bit too mechanical as they focus on bellydance as a workout rather than a dance, but her book is very good) and I have watched a few instructional DVD's as well. I love everything about bellydance, especially the beautiful costumes and the music (although I like dancing to contemporary music as well). I hope to get serious about it and improve my performance so I can do it professionally. Well... that's about it! If you'd like to know anything else feel free to ask! If anyone from around my area wants to contact me, reply here with your email and I'll drop you a line. Have a great day! :D

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there are any places (in Australia) that sells (or where I can get) tribal costuming. I'm into the "Rachel Brice look". I've been looking around and all I'm finding is cabaret stuff. Any help much appreciated.

Shimmies,
Alex
