Does anyone else feel that TroutMaskReplica is a very overrated mess that could've been something special if Don would've not been such a "I gotta be weird" kinda guy and let a real producer make some suggestions to him?

I know 90% of Beefheart's stuff well enough to sing the lyrics to the songs, even though I haven't listened to it much in years. Including TMR. I listened to it for different reasons than other people. I thought it sounded retarded. I've heard a lot of strange jazz and stuff over the years, but TMR is just a mess of hype and idiocy in my opinion. The musicianship was spectacular. I'll give it that. Anyone who can play anything so random and terrible sounding twice in a row has to be somewhat talented.

I didn't hate the whole album. I think there was some moments of shininess, but for the most part it was junk. 80% filler.

Seriously, I've listened to the album a good 50 times in my life. But I've listened to Safe As Milk 500 times, because it's quality shit. I've listened to most of the later albums a bunch of times as well. And I think about 3/4 of the material is spectacular.

If I made an album more abstract (which I could, in 20 minutes with ProTools and Fruity Loops) would a bunch of music buffs hail me as a genius too?

My point is, Don tried too hard on that album. He was totally faking it and everybody bought into it. Such is the world of art.

A rare concert of Daevid Allen's Magick Brothers with myself on flute on two
tracks from their 1996 italian tour has been uploaded by Maclen on Dime as
Torrent #192982. A single version of the song "Magick Brother" can be found
on my profile page at myspace.com. Below's a photo with Zero and Bloom
from the same year. Good luck to all fans, and happy listening!

Least favorite Beefheart song; Hobo Chang Ba
Favorite CD; Safe as Milk
I've been a Beefheart fan for about a year, after my friend told me about them.
I listen to really a lot of different genres. Here are some bands I like; Virus, Ved Buens Ende, Kayo Dot, maudlin of the Well, The Grateful Dead, Hammock and Anathema (sometimes it's nice), Beyond Dawn, The Residents, Tuxedomoon ( :) ), Hot Tuna,  Thine, Marvin Gaye.

C'mon, we're being lame Beefheart fans having this wonderful space to talk about him into the ground and not a one of us ever does! Greifaholic!

Here's a question for you all, which particular band do you think covered Beefheart the absolute very best. Easily I'd pick The White Stripes, and thier very first EP, which was a Beefheart cover record. They did a very knowing and far ranging set of 3. I mean isn't it so damn cool he covers Party of Special Things to Do? Arguably one of the best things to come out of that two record era, actually I doubt anybody'll argue with me about it. They do that song, China Pig, and Ashtray Heart.

They also do a song from way early in his career and a song near the end! Very obviously he's a large fan, his dress sense these days replicates Beefheart all the way down to the top hat and goatee. Plus a number of songs on his latest album have some really abrupt melody changes, Beefheartian' even. It's SO awesome he plays these tunes live oftenly, like he does Son House or Bob Dylan tunes, since it may inspire a fan in the audience to look up the original, and fall in love with Beefheart or the others.

I think if The White Stripes were only as famous as The Black Keys, they'd not have such a huge lynch mob on their trail. I genuinely think they're the greatest popular rock band in music today. And I think we're really starting to get a sense of originality out of Jack White. Get Behind Me Satan was frequently a very strange album, and I have an idea he may go even further down the rabbit hole as time goes on!

Any word on any new Beefheart products out for purchase anyone has heard? I'd love to hear that Lick My Decals Off, Baby will be re-issued for cd. I've got the LP and I DAMNED LOOOOOOOVE the album, as much as any other of his. It's quite different from Trout Mask Replica, but still far weirder than even his later greater Doc at the Radar Station (my vote for favorite beefheart record. my vote for BEST beefheart record is Trout Mask).

You????

Gary Marker's Most Amusing Beefheart Moment

Back when "Diddy-Wah-Diddy" was released, Don and the band did the mandatory lip-synch appearance on a local L.A. teen dance show called "9th Street West." It was hosted by an annoying, smarmy, miniscule, super-hyper DJ named Sam Riddle. Riddle's usual M.O. was to schmooze with the artist for a bit of time, either before or after their on-air performance--usually by asking a lot of inane questions. (He once actually asked Doug Sam, when "She's About A Mover" was chart-bound, "How many of you are there in the Sir Douglas Quintet?")

So anyway, back then no one knew that trying to interview Captain Beefheart was, at best, a shaky proposition. What happened was (and keep in mind that this was LIVE TV), after the Magic Band had finished their lip-synch, Sam Riddle came bounding up to Don, carrying a huge wad of white, waxed butcher's paper. "Captain Beefheart, Captain Beefheart!" he was yelling in his usual helium-drenched hyper-voice. "Look what I've got for YOU!" And with that, he whips open the butcher's paper, revealing a gigantic, wet, raw genuine beef heart--which he shoves up toward a startled Don Van Vliet's face. "It's a real beef heart! Whaddya think of THAT, Captain Beefheart?" he squeaked.

Without a second of hestitation, a now very angry DVV snakes his arm out, grabs the raw beef heart in his bare hand, holds it over Riddle's head, at which point the munchkin-like host starts backing away quickly. But not quickly enough. "What do you think of THIS, Sam Riddle?" Don growls, giving the heart a hefty squeeze. Bloody beef heart juice squirts, drools and dribbles all over Riddle's trendy pastel suit, with some overspray on his thick facial make-up. "You gotta lot of nerve sticking that ugly thing in my face," Don mutters, while Riddle smiles like an imbecile and announces a breakway for commercial a couple minutes ahead of schedule.

Needless to say, Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band were never invited back for another appearance on that particular TV show.

Gary wrote a caveat to the above story.

"The appearance I documented was a live, real time event, broadcast only to the LA area. They also taped the show for syndication across the country. When I told friends of mine in other cities to be sure and watch Beefheart's antics on the show, most reported back that the pivotal moment wherein he douses Sam Riddle with beefheart juice wasn't there; it had apparently been edited out. So, if any tapes of that particular show still exist, it's a rather tame version and the best moments of the encounter are missing. But it really happened, I saw it with my own two eyes, and so did a lot of other people in Los Angeles." - Gary Marker

I don't know if enough people read this community's posts for it to work, but let's try it anyway: Captain Beefheart album song survivor!

Basically, we'll do one album at a time, in chronological order. I'll list the songs on each studio album and everyone choses their one LEAST favourite song (the song you want to eliminate). We continue until we end up with just one song. It's an interesting game to see which are considered the best Beefheart songs from each record.

    We'll start with:

  • Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do

  • Zig Zag Wanderer

  • Call on Me

  • Dropout Boogie

  • I'm Glad

  • Electricity

  • Yellow Brick Road

  • Abba Zaba

  • Plastic Factory

  • Where There's Woman

  • Grown So Ugly

  • Autumn's Child

  • (Remember, it's your least favourite song you vote for until the final round.)

I read they were re-releasing Lick My Decals Off, Baby, but I didn't read when or any of that business. I on Saturday found a copy on vinyl for ONLY 11 dollars!!! Freaked the hell out of me, my hands grabbed it before I knew what I was thinking.

It's the FIRST time I've had a chance to hear the whole thing, I only ever downloaded a small handful of tracks before, not wanting to ruin the experience of hearing it all the way through for the first time, that magic listen that every Beefheart record has afforded me in the past.

Lick My Decals Off SO lives up to it's "almost/if not better than Trout Mask Replica" reputation, I must declare. I can't ever tell if I like the music more or if I like the inherent humor that bleeds through each tune, but it doesn't matter because I know I LOVED whatever the hell there was to love about it.

Of course my favorite song from the record was (I've heard it before so it's kind of unfair to the rest of the album) "Woe-Is-Uh-Me-Bop", but as a whole the second side of the record is even better than the first, especially "The Buggy Boogie Woogie" and "I Wanna Find Me a Woman To Hold My Big Toe", or "Spage Age Couple".

Everyone look closely into the racks of your fancy record stores, you might just come upon this thing. I dunno if on cd the same is true, but to find the thing for only 11 BUCKS when online on ebay or elsewhere it goes for gigantic sums, makes me think this was pretty recently issued out. Or I could be wrong. In any case I HAVE every Captain Beefheart album available, FINALLY. Yay for me.

I'm pretty excited to have found this place.
I'm new to Capt. Beefheart. I probably heard his music often as a child, but I'm not certain. My dad is responsible for my knowledge of the strange and obscure, and he neglected to mention Capt. Beefheart until a few weeks ago.
Not that I hold that against him. =D

So this fill-out thingy is pretty pointless, but I suppose it's the principal of the thing...

Hi. I'm glad there's a community; I'm coming to the party pretty late, but two months ago somebody gave me a copy of Trout Mask Replica and told me a bunch of songs I thought were Howlin' Wolf near the end of his recording career were actually Beefheart at the begining of his. Now I'm effin' obsessed.

    THE Q&A

My favourite Captain Beefheart song: This may be cheating, but it's "Willie The Pimp."

My favourite Captain Beefheart album: I can't stop listening to Trout Mask Replica, so we'll see.

My least favourite Captain Beefheart song: Don't have one yet, but "Hot Head" didn't thrill me when I first listened to Doc At The Radar Station

How long have you been a fan of Beefheart?: Either fifteen years or two months, depending on whether or not I had to know it was Captain Beefheart when I first heard him.

Which others music artists do you listen to?: My "Recently Played" in iTunes says TV on the Radio, Tom Waits, Frank Zappa, Iggy Pop, Queens of the Stone Age, Stevie Wonder, Eagles of Death Metal, Fugazi, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Hank Williams, The Clash, T. Rex, The Stones, PJ Harvey, and The Pixies.

β€’ My favourite Captain Beefheart song:

That’s a difficult one, as I have several, but a few come to mind:
    Moonlight on Vermont
    Semi-Multicoloured Caucasian
    Sun Zoom Spark
    Long-Necked Bottles

β€’ My favourite Captain Beefheart album:

    Clear Spot.

β€’ My least favourite Captain Beefheart song:

    Sheriff of Hong Kong

β€’ How long have you been a fan of Beefheart?:

Since about 1980. I saw him and the last edition of his Magic Band (Tepper, Snyder, Feldman, Williams) play at the Venue in London on the Ice-Cream for Crow tour. Most excellent. A couple of years ago, a mate of mine and I drove to Woodland Hills and found the old pink house where the β€œclassic” Magic Band lived and rehearsed the Trout Mask Replica songs.

β€’ Which other music artists do you listen to?:

Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers, Muddy Waters, ZZ Top, Mothers of Invention, Iggy Pop, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughan, Son House, Steve Hillage, BBKing, Gary Moore, Hendrix, Canned Heat, Del Amitri, Robert Johnson, Foo Fighters, Clapton, Peter Green, lots more...
