A CANARY WHO COUNTS [22 Feb 2008|03:08pm]
๐Ÿ‘ Image

sad_sick_truth

Let us suppose that we could suspend the laws of physics for a few minutes, train our radiotelescopes on a likely-looking star system with the right kind of planets, and listen for signs of intelligent life.  We adjust our headphones and immediately hear something like this:

TWEE-CHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEEE โ€“ DWERP

We are equipped with a sophisticated computer that can instantly mimic and return the signal, so we transmit the following back to our suspect star system:

TWEE-CHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEEE โ€“ DWERP

Only a moment passes, and the following signal comes in:

TWEE-CHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEEE โ€“ DWERP DWERP

Interesting โ€“ the same pattern, with the last sound in the series now repeated once.  We reply:

TWEE-CHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEEE โ€“ DWERP DWERP

Again, almost immediately, our mysterious signal source returns with:

TWEE-CHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEEE โ€“ DWERP DWERP DWERP

Almost too good to be true โ€“ the final sound in the sequence now appears three times, precisely as it should if someone were demonstrating an ability to count 1-2-3.  So we reply with

TWEE-CHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEEE โ€“ DWERP DWERP DWERP

and again, instantly, the message comes back as

TWEE-CHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEECHEEE โ€“ DWERP DWERP DWERP DWERP

Now, you may find this difficult to believe, but exactly this kind of exchange recently took place between a human observer and an apparently intelligent non-human source.  It was a spontaneous, unrehearsed exchange.  I know this exchange took place, because I was the human involved, and the non-human intelligence was none other than my pet canary, Carson.

Iโ€™m left scratching my head this morning.  If some sophisticated monitoring system had, in fact, had exactly the same exchange with โ€“ letโ€™s say some unidentified object traveling between the earth and the moon โ€“ it would be occasion for mass rejoicing that finally, proof exists that WE ARE NOT ALONE.

But heck, Carson and I already know that.

Saving A Bird From Starving To Death [28 Oct 2007|10:52am]
๐Ÿ‘ Image

cartoonmayhem
I noticed Tibberts (a pearly conure) wasn't being his usual sprightly self. He was limping around on the bottom of his cage. Then I saw his food bowl. He hadn't touched a pellet in it. He showed no other signs of sickness but was extremely light. He is also going through a very terrible molt.
So I got a syringe and fed him some orange juice. He lapped it up. I gave him some more. He kept lapping it up.
Hmm.
So then I fixed a power meal for him: a scrambled egg, banana, cheerios, orange juice, pomegranate juice, seed, spirulina, molting and conditioning formula and threw it all in the blender and pureed it.

Then the rest of the evening, I took that syringe and stuffed his face with it. He gobbled it up, so he was definitely hungry. I stuffed his face all evening long. I made him eat and he never regurgitated, and even after he was starting to fight me and showing signs of being his old feisty, stubborn self and resisted, I fed him more.
He was unhappy where he was situated and unhappy at the lack of attention. He hated his pellets.

It really disturbs me when a bird starves itself to death because they are unhappy. But it happened once before.
11 years ago I went on a vacation and left my birds with a pet sitter. One of them was a lutino cockatiel who was a picky eater like Tibberts and also extremely attached to us. She would eat only a certain kind of seed and cheerios and when the sitter ran out of both, she died. I was enormously pissed off that the vet was never called and they didn't notice.

But birds are people too and I believe they can be so depressed they stop eating. So now Tibberts is in the family room, just him, and now he's hopping around and tried to hump my husband's hand. Twice.
We'll probably give him several doses of that power formula for the rest of his life to be absolutely sure.
And of course, tons of exclusive attention.

New baby!

Dutch blue lovebird. We might be calling him Herbie. He's 5 weeks old and we still have to feed him baby bird formula. He's sweet.

He has some food on his face. :p

Well off to Linguistics class! Woosh. (Don't worry, he's not left on his own :) )

Parrotlet chomp! [29 Nov 2006|09:51pm]

Hey fellow bird lovers :)

We just took home an English budgie and a parrotlet(both 7-8 weeks old) the other day, theyre both very sweet and adorable. The budgie(Buddy) is still pretty shy, but he's more relaxed now than when we first arrived. The parrotlet(Kiwi) is very cuddly and loving. She loves nothing more than to hang out with us and get her head rub time. However...she tends to have the occasional chomp at our skin! I see no aggression in it, she just walks over and chomps us. She even managed to give the inside of my ear a chomp. Ouch. Anyone know if parrotlets just do that? I've been wondering if it's because she wants more food. Besides eating from her dish she likes to hang out with us and eat seed from our hands.

I'll try getting pictures of our new birds eventually, in the mean time, here's our cockatiel, Squeaky. He's a very tech savvy bird. :p Unfortunately for our keyboards..

Squeaky!Collapse )

My mother's parakeet is doing something a bit odd. He sticks his head inside his water dish (the kind that has a cover) and talks and talks. It kind of echoes a bit. Sometimes it even sounds like he's blowing bubbles. Anyone ever heard of this? You think he's just entertaining himself? We made sure he had fresh water and everything but he keeps doing it. It's pretty funny.

An Update a Mao:
I got her to a hospital a vet Sunday morning checked her out if it is an eggs itโ€™s soft shelled and wouldnโ€™t be able to be seen in an x-ray so he gave her a injection of calcium and an injection of fluids to give her a boost, sheโ€™s home now and weโ€™re putting her outside in her cage (obviously) where the humidity is (the bill came to around $200 and something so we couldnโ€™t by a humidifier) so far sheโ€™s eating and drinking fine, and her poops are more frequent and smaller, sheโ€™s not out of a woods yet Iโ€™m gonna try to get her to a bird specialist in our area once I get some more cash.

The Bad news is that today while taking the birds (Mao and my cockatiel Tony) in for the night Tony flew away, I had Mao inside first and as per usual he was calling for her as he does any time he canโ€™t see her, when I turned around to get him his cage was empty, the thing is that he didnโ€™t get out through the front door of his cage, his cage has a side door that I NEVER use, Iโ€™ve opened it maybe twice since I put him in it years ago and when I closed it again today it was really hard to open back again. But there it was, open and he was gone. I whistled for him for hours while my mother drove around handing out her card to anything that mightโ€™ve seen anything, I left him cage in the middle of our back yard with the door open and the big floodlight focusing on it just in case maybe he saw it or came back cause of the sound of the pond. I mean I tired to think of anything I mightโ€™ve done wrong and I donโ€™t know, Iโ€™ve had Tony since 98 I got him for Christmas I love him so much no matter how he felt towards me and now I donโ€™t think Mao has any clue where he is.

Thanks to all the people who gave me advice of what to do about Mao
Hereโ€™s an update:

She hasnโ€™t sat on the bottom on her cage at all sheโ€™s still jumping around and climbing thought her balance isnโ€™t totally stable, sheโ€™s shown signs of lethargy and she has puffed up at time. No egg has appeared, but she is giving off these gigantic poops some of which may have blood in them because they are on the red side. She has pooed about 8 times in three days. Iโ€™m a high school student with little to no income, and an exam at the emergency vet is $114 not including the treatment, I asked my mother but she really wants the birds to be gone out of the house now so she said no. There isnโ€™t really anything else I can do for her on the way of treatment, Is there anything I can do to at least make her comfortable?

I think there is a problem and it's entirely my fault

I cleaned my Bird cages like I was advised too but now looking at Mao I know she has a third egg in side of her she needs to lay but after watching her for and hour or more i noticed she was not pooping, after that she did poo and it was all liquid.

she's been eating quite a bit, and she isn't sitting on the bottom of the cage. I scheduled an appointment at the vet for her (they have no bird specialist) but other than that i don't know what to do i'm not even sure I can pay for this visit.

I'm scared cause i looked up info on egg binding and it's looking like that may be the case, she's probably very obese (I'll see if i can post a picture soon) and she's doing a lot of tail wagging and i think she's having issues breathing.

I know it's my fault but i want to know is there anything i can do for her right now?
