6:38pm:
 Hola catalans!

This is going to be in English cause its been forever since I have practised Catalan.
I just came back home from doing a semester abroad in Spain, in Sevilla. I managed to do a trip to Girona, and I loved it! It really kicked up my interest for Catalan and the culture. I tried my hardest to speak Catalan, and the people seemed to appreciate it, and a few were really patient and we had some good conversations. I picked up some books to learn Catalan and a short novel.

That being said, I have new goals and more inspiration to learn Catalan. I would like to try to save enough money this year so that I can do a summer Catalan course at the University of Barcelona (Do any of you know if the program is good?). This summer a goal of mine is to read my short novel, and to teach myself more Catalan, and try and be more involved with this community.

So I want you ask you guys, do you have any specific goals for Catalan this summer?

3:00pm: Encomana el català
The Generalitat de Catalunya has made a commercial promoting the use of Catalan. It's to encourage people to speak in Catalan first before any other language.

Caution: It's very catchy and this tune will get stuck in your head. hehe.

10:03pm: Hola, em presento.
Hola catalanofils!

Be, em presento.

5:55pm: Universitats Catalanas
 Hola a tots!

Since posting here last, I have been teaching myself/reading/watching/trying to write in Catalan, and I love it!

I've contacted two professors in my area, one from Barcelona, and an American who researches in Catalan culture and literature, about possibilities of me learning Catalan academically in a class, and to incorporate it into my studies in the future. Both said if I really wanted to be successful to learn to be fluent I would have to go to Barcelona or somewhere in Catalunia to go learn. Next June I think I can make a trip out to Barcelona with my friend from Valencia (also I'll be staying with her for a while in Valencia which will be good too), and Im thinking about looking at some of the universities out there.

I know in Spain/Europe, to study Catalan and its literature - you do a degree in Catalan studies/filologia catalana, and it is seperate from Hispanic studies (which I am in at the moment in a Canadian university). However in North America, Catalan is a part of Hispanic Studies (if its offered to learn), so I was thinking of a way to somehow get to do both possibly at a Spanish university. However from what I can see I dont think this could work out, and I would have to choose one over to other if I chose to finish my studies at a Spanish university.

Have any of you done Catalan Studies, or Hispanic Studies with Catalan? If so, which university did you go to and how did you like it?

Just to note, Im just looking into this, Im not sure/fully set on changing degrees right away. If I did do this, this would be in 2 years. Im going to do a semester in Sevilla in January, and if I like going to school in Spain, I would definitely move to Spain to finish my studies.

If anyone has any type of advice, or personal experiance in Catalan studies academically, it would be very appreciated. :)

Graciès i passi-ho bé

6:44pm: Trying to learn Catalan
 Hola a tots!

I am Canadian who has been learning Spanish/Castellano for 3 years now, and it is my major in university. I love Spanish culture, and the Romance languages, so I have always been curious about learning Catalan. In Canadian universities courses in Catalan are extremely rare, so I dont think I'll ever get a chance to study it in the class room while doing my degree in Canada. I have three Spanish friends, two from Valencia and one from Barcelona and they all speak Catalan, and my girlfriend from Valencia was showing me how to pronounce Catalan last week.

I found that when I first read Catalan, I did not understand it that well, but after my friend told me how to pronounce words, and having me read text aloud to her, I found that I understood it better after that. Two nights ago I thought I would try to watch a Catalan documentary online and see how I would do, and I did not find it too bad to understand. Of course I dont understand it as well as Castellano, but I get the jist of what is being said.

At the moment I cant really afford buying books on learning Catalan, so I was wondering what types of online resources are good if you want to learn the language. As well, because of my Castellano, should I just continue to read text/read it aloud in Catalan if I find that I am understanding it? Im definatly going to continue to watch more Catalan tv online. Any advise on learning Catalan on your own would be great.

Gràcies

M'agraden els idiomes "for the sake of it", que diuen, i parl fluentment català, castellà i gallec. Em defenso bastant bé en l'anglès, i sé les quatre coses bàsiques de francés, grec, italià, asturià i alemany, i algunes paraules d'altres que no em serveixen, a dia d'avui, de res.

Dit això, suposo que ja està fet.

11:51am: Una pregunta pels mallorquins...
Bon dia! Mem...

Hola a tots!

9:21am: visiting Barcelona--American & Spanish speaker
Hola a tothom,

So in a couple weeks, I (American) and my husband (British) will be visiting Barcelona for the first time, while on an extended trip to see his family in the UK.

I've never been to Barcelona, but I studied in Valencia in university. I speak English and Spanish fluently (I'm a professional interpreter and translator); my husband speaks only English. I can read Catalan fine and I can mostly understand it when spoken (in Valencia, people mostly spoke to me in Catalan and I answered in Spanish), but about all I can say is "Entenc el català però no ho parlo" (in addition to "bon dia, bona tarda, bona nit") and my pronunciation is shaky at best. (And I can say "El cel és blau" but I doubt that's going to be useful.)

I have a couple friends who have recently come back from Barcelona. All of them were harassed by random strangers for being American (and all of them are polite, reasonable Americans who've lived in other countries), and the one who (like me) is bilingual in Spanish was actually asked to leave by a shop owner for having the nerve to ask for batteries in Spanish instead of Catalan. So, in short, I'm starting to dread my trip to a city I've always wanted to visit.

With that in mind, a few questions:
1. Can I get away with claiming to be (like my husband) Scottish? I used to get asked a lot if I was Scottish (or French, or Russian, or Argentinean) last time I was in Spain, and I promise not to be a stereotypical loud American tourist, but my (English) accent is definitely American. But I'm unlikely to have to show my passport anywhere but at the airport and maybe the hotel, right?

2. Is it a really bad idea for me to try to speak Spanish? (My Spanish accent is screwed-up enough that Spaniards generally think I sound Latin American—usually Colombian—and Latin Americans generally think I sound Spanish. That's what comes from learning Peninsular Spanish and then spending eight years working with Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, Mexicans, Guatemalans, Ecuadorans, and Uruguayans.) My (Mexican) co-worker claims that it's more acceptable to speak Spanish if you make it clear you're not from Spain, is that true? Do I get points for trying to speak Catalan? Is it enough to start with "bon dia, com estàs?" or do I need to do the whole spiel?

3. Is there a guide to speaking Catalan for Spanish speakers, like Com licença! for learning Portuguese? Or at least a good Catalan/Spanish tourist phrase book? (I'll settle for Catalan/English, I guess, but I'd prefer Catalan/Spanish.) I mean, I really would like to speak some Catalan, I'm a big believer in speaking at least a little of the language of a country you're visiting, but my expressive Catalan is really limited.

4. And a more light-hearted question: is wearing jeans still Simply Not Done in Spain?

Gràcies mil!

1:37pm: Barcelona per a barcelonins i visitants

Bon dia a tothom,

Espero que us agradi !!!
