Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus, Türkiye
We’ve long believed that a great guest experience can also be a more sustainable one. We’re improving efficiency, reducing water and waste, preserving biodiversity and sourcing locally and responsibly, all while enhancing operations for our Team Members and supporting a great stay for our guests. Across our global portfolio, we’re preventing food waste through AI-enabled tools, partnering with owners to design and build more efficient hotels and scaling positive impact through responsible and sustainable sourcing. Together, these efforts bring sustainable innovation to life and help us act as stewards of the beautiful destinations we call home.
Sustainable operations
Hilton’s approach to sustainable operations integrates environmental responsibility with business performance, helping hotels operate more efficiently while delivering value to owners, Team Members, and guests. Through ongoing programs and investments, we are reducing emissions intensity, water use and waste generation and expanding initiatives including sustainable design, renovations and single-use plastics reduction.
We are advancing more sustainable dining by combining innovative technology, locally inspired concepts and smarter kitchen practices to minimize food waste and enhance the guest experience, demonstrating how purpose-driven operations can strengthen resilience and drive long-term impact.
Third-party certification
Hilton has maintained certification to three internationally recognized ISO management system standards across our global portfolio since 2014. This ongoing certification, verified annually through DEKRA’s comprehensive audit process, reinforces our leadership in sustainable operations and continuous improvement.
As the world’s largest hotel portfolio certified to these standards, Hilton provides independently verified assurance that operations meet the same high benchmarks everywhere. The result is stronger performance, reduced environmental impact, and confidence for guests.

Building and operating sustainable “green” hotels
Our owners and developers are critical partners in the advancement of a more sustainable future for the hospitality industry. Hilton developed Sustainable Design Checklists for these partners to support informed decisions on sustainability. Here are some examples of opportunities during design, construction, renovation, and conversion to incorporate energy efficiency and sustainable attributes in our hotels.
Roadmap to emissions intensity reduction
Our phased implementation strategy to reduce our emissions begins with operational shifts that require limited resources to implement, followed by investments in high-impact energy efficiency projects. In the next stage, we work toward off-site renewable energy procurement and end-of-life equipment replacement, as well as high-efficiency retrofits and electrification measures. The final phases of the roadmap focus on on-site renewable electricity generation and, as a last step, the purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs) and carbon offsets for any remaining unavoidable emissions. This waterfall approach enables Hilton to make informed decisions and has helped us chart the path to achieving our emissions intensity reduction goals.
Current practices that require no or low cost.
At the end of life, investing in higher efficiency mechanical equipment, ideally powered by electricity. The emissions associated with these investments often lasts over 20 years.
Enhancing efficiency with faster payback investments, often capturing tax or utility incentives to accelerate ROI.
Making investments in off-site renewable power in partnership with owners; opportunity to sell back to the grid and secure RECs.
Harnessing clean renewable power from the sun or deep inside the earth.
Purchasing annual high quality carbon offsets and RECs as a last resort to make up the balance.
