Coming from predominatly Brighton&Hove but also from Eastbourne, Dark Globe's Silent Lightning have built up a repoitoire of original material and played gigs in the Brighton&Hove area as well as releasing a short album on our own label.
AIM: (as written by Karl) I am trying to do something original and diverse. I want to break away from the standard "rock band" and want to try and bring some vitality to modern music. I have affinity with bands like Oneida for making songs like Sheets Of Easter (14 mins of a one chord riff) because it is abnormal, and this doesn't bother them. Music should be exciting and exhilarating. It shouldn't be a predictable 1,2,3,4 wow we can play 3 chords malarkey. Music should slap you round the face and say "Wake The Fuck Up" it shouldn't be "woe is me, that girl just dumped me". That's not to say love songs are a no-no. Leonard Cohen wrote beautiful love songs yet he isn't considered soppy.
I want to create something that touches the soul in a way that would make emo bands wet their pants. I want to create sounds that would blow the Strokes's head off thinking they are "the future of rock n roll". Music should have vitality and originality. Not repeating punk which is 27 years old and counting. Punk had the right attitude but it has been watered down and copied until it's lost it. It is meant to be exciting and fresh, new and rebelling against the norm. D.G.S.L. are punk in attitude. But I don't want to be punk in sound, because punk has been done and I want to create something experimental, emotional, and original. I want to do the equivalent of Velvet Underground releasing White Light/ White Heat in '68, a world still immersed in hippy culture being hit with a dose of high octane distorted noise rock, the blue-print for Sonic Youth and early Mogwai. This is not to say it should be a dose of high octane distorted noise rock, and personally the music I make needs to be strong lyrically, it needs to capture the same vibe that the lyrics of Bob Dylan or Julian Cope, it doesn't have to be complicated arty poetry, it has to be meaningful and soulful, it has to work with the tune, which there must also be one, and it has to be honest. Honesty is the only way to create powerful music. If the musicians aren't being honest with themselves how is the listener meant to believe in it? I want to make music that is honest and open, lyrically emotional and tunefully powerful, yet not overcomplicated. The tunes should always be rooted in the acceptable, even if the music isn't. I like the way that Neil Young has his trademark tunes style, yet flexibility in his sound. I want my music to be versatile in sound yet always recognisable as what I make.
I want my music to be fresh and un-predictable in terms of direction, like Primal Scream did going from dancy-trippy to punk-industrial-disco. I don't want to be labelled, I want to create music that varies tremendously, from post-punk-esque bursts to psychedelic jams. People shouldn't be tied down to one sound. Music should be honest and from the soul, not some contrived attempt to get famous. It should be heartfelt and exciting, soul touching and meaningful, it should be interesting and inspiring. I want to create music that is intelligent, but not incomprehensible, experimental but not un-listenable, emotional but not soppy. It should bring something new into people's lives and not be another "insert-nme-created-genre-here" band.
