⇱ Vite vs Webpack — Which Build Tool Should You Use? - DEV Community

Quick Comparison

Vite Webpack
Dev server Instant (native ESM) Slower (bundling)
HMR Near-instant Slower
Config Minimal Verbose
Production build Rollup Webpack
Plugin ecosystem Growing Massive
Learning curve Low High

When to Use Vite

  • New projects (it's the default for React, Vue, Svelte)
  • You want fast dev server startup
  • You don't need complex Webpack-specific plugins
  • You value simplicity

When to Use Webpack

  • Legacy projects already using Webpack
  • You need Module Federation (micro-frontends)
  • You need a specific Webpack plugin with no Vite equivalent
  • Complex custom build pipelines

Key Differences

Dev Server: Vite serves files over native ESM — no bundling during development. This means instant server start regardless of app size. Webpack bundles everything before serving, which gets slower as your app grows.

Configuration: A Vite config is typically 10-20 lines. A Webpack config can be hundreds of lines with loaders, plugins, and optimization settings.

Production: Vite uses Rollup for production builds, which produces smaller bundles. Webpack uses its own bundler.

Verdict

Use Vite for new projects. Migrate from Webpack to Vite when you can. There's very little reason to start a new project with Webpack in 2026.
