VOOZH | about |
We are the Church of England across a diverse region stretching from the Yorkshire coast to the A1, and between the Rivers Humber and Tees.
We are a family of nearly 600 churches and 122 schools across 442 parishes, united in praising God through Jesus Christ and service to others. Led by the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, we live Christ’s story day by day – through faith, worship, and action.
Living Christ’s Story is our diocesan strategic plan for 2021-31. To live Christ’s story is to be part of God’s mission of love in and for the world today. We need a flourishing and sustainable church of followers of Jesus for this to happen.
The Diocese of York is a network of worshipping communities across 2,670 square miles of Yorkshire’s rural landscapes, coastal towns, and urban centres, including Middlesbrough, York, and Hull. United in faith, we aim to reflect the rich diversity of the region we serve.
We are committed to safeguarding children, young people, and adults. We strive to create protective and supportive environments where all people, especially those who are vulnerable, can worship and pursue their faith journey in safety.
The Diocese of York offers help, resources and support for churches, schools, ministers as they work and live God’s calling.

As Christian people, we are called to a lifelong journey of discipleship: a way of living as followers of Jesus that lies at the heart of our faith. Discipleship shapes how we live, pray, make decisions, build relationships, and act in the world. It is a daily commitment to becoming more like Christ and growing into the people God created us to be.
The love of God is ours for life, and the Church offers a rich tradition of prayers, services, and special occasions to help you experience that love, whether you’re celebrating, grieving, or navigating change. Events include christenings and baptisms, confirmations, weddings, and funerals.
Thanks to external funding, the Diocese of York is expanding its mission to grow churches of missionary disciples and connect with people we haven’t yet reached. This support enables us to share Christ’s story in new and transformative ways.
