Abstract

THE oxidation of olivine is a commonly recognised natural phenomenon and has been investigated experimentally using crystallographic and thermodynamic techniques1,2. It is generally believed that the oxidation of the olivine occurs by initial breakdown of the fayalite component, and subsequent reaction with the forsterite component, to give magnetite and orthopyroxene3.
