iOS 27 is the upcoming twentieth major release of Apple's iOS operating system for the iPhone, serving as the successor to iOS 26. It was announced at the 2026 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8, 2026, alongside iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, watchOS 27, visionOS 27, tvOS 27, and HomePod software 27.[3] It will be released in late 2026.
Features
System features
Apple Intelligence
iOS 27 expands Apple Intelligence, Apple's generative artificial intelligence system, with improved Writing Tools and the ability to generate images locally on the device.[4][5] Resource-intensive features such as image generation are subject to daily usage limits, with larger allowances available to subscribers of paid iCloud+ tiers, while most other Apple Intelligence features remain free of charge.[5] The most advanced capabilities, including custom Siri voices and enhanced on-device dictation, are restricted to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air and later models.[5]
Siri AI
The centrepiece of the update is Siri AI, a rebuilt version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence that uses generative AI models and behaves more like a conversational chatbot than earlier versions.[6][5] Apple co-developed the underlying models with Google, whose technology runs within Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.[7] Apple describes Siri AI as having three core abilities: personal context understanding, broad world knowledge, and onscreen awareness.[6] It can hold back-and-forth conversations, draw on personal information from apps such as Mail, Messages, Photos, and Calendar, answer general questions using web search, and respond to what is shown on screen.[6][5] Siri can also carry out multi-step actions within apps, such as adding events to Calendar or adding photographs to an album.[5]
A standalone Siri app provides a chat-style history of past conversations that syncs across devices through iCloud and lets users continue earlier conversations or begin new ones.[8][6] Siri appears in the Dynamic Island; swiping down from the centre of the screen opens a combined "Search or Ask" interface that replaces the Spotlight search interface, while Notification Center is instead reached by swiping down from the upper-left corner.[5] Writing tools are integrated into Siri, allowing text to be generated, rewritten, or proofread from a systemwide interface rather than a separate panel.[6][5] Siri AI is not available at launch in the European Union or China while Apple works through regulatory requirements.[6]
AirPods
The AirPods settings UI has been revamped for iOS 27.[9]
Parental controls
iOS 27 introduces a redesigned Screen Time interface and several new child-safety controls. Parents can set Time Allowances across app categories such as entertainment, games, and social media, and create schedules that determine which apps are available at different times of day, with recommendations based on a child's age and guidance from child-development experts.[4] An "Ask to Browse" feature requires children to obtain a guardian's approval before visiting a new website, and parents can require approval before a child communicates with a new contact in Messages, FaceTime, or Phone.[4][10]
Other system changes
A new battery icon was introduced with iOS 27.[11] The AirPods settings interface was redesigned, adding a custom equalizer that lets users adjust lows, mids, and highs.[5] A Liquid Glass slider in the settings allows users to adjust the translucency of the system interface, and Apple revised the Liquid Glass design introduced in iOS 26 to improve readability.[5] Apple also described general performance and responsiveness improvements across the system.[5]
App features
Camera and Photos
Visual Intelligence was moved into the Camera app as a new Siri mode that replaces the previous control-button shortcut.[5] Through it, users can photograph objects to get information from Siri, look up the nutritional value of food, import multiple events into Calendar at once, split a receipt, import contact details from a business card, or add a membership card to the Wallet app.[5]
The Photos app gains generative editing tools. The Clean Up feature is better at removing objects and filling in missing areas, while new Reframe and Extend options use AI to change a photo's composition or enlarge its crop with newly generated content.[5] Other additions include a "Captured by Me" collection, support for keywords and star ratings, the ability to save a video frame as a still photo, and slideshows for any set of images.[5] iCloud Shared Albums add full-resolution sharing, a 30-day expiration option, and the ability for users on Android and Windows devices to contribute images.[5]
Safari and Passwords
Safari uses Apple Intelligence to automatically organise open tabs, bookmarks, and the Reading List into related topics.[10][5] Users can generate custom browser extensions from natural-language prompts, and a "Notify Me" feature monitors a webpage and alerts the user when its content changes.[10][5] Apple also said Safari is more power-efficient than in the previous release.[10] The Passwords app can use Apple Intelligence to navigate to a website, sign in, and replace a weak or compromised password with a stronger one automatically.[5]
Wallet
The Apple Wallet app adds a "Create a Pass" feature that uses Visual Intelligence to generate a digital pass for tickets, memberships, and similar items from services that do not natively support Wallet.[5] A bill-splitting feature uses Apple Cash to divide the cost of a scanned receipt among several people.[5]
Phone, FaceTime, and Messages
The Phone app adds Call Context, which surfaces relevant on-device information during a call, such as a flight number when contacting an airline.[5] FaceTime gains a Dual Capture option that streams the front and rear cameras simultaneously.[5] In Messages, sending large photos and videos no longer delays accompanying text messages, outgoing messages show a send indicator, Tapback notifications are consolidated, and Apple Intelligence suggests actions such as inserting a photo or sharing a location.[5]
Maps and Find My
Apple Maps uses aerial imagery and Vision Intelligence models to produce a more detailed and lifelike Flyover experience.[5] Find My adds more flexible location sharing, allowing users to share their location for a custom duration or until a set time and to pause sharing with individual people.[12] A new "Hide Location" option lets a user stop sharing their location with a specific person without notifying that person, who instead sees a "No Location Found" message; the feature was widely reported on for its privacy implications.[12][13] The Find My interface was also refreshed with the Liquid Glass design.[12]
Other apps
Image Playground was overhauled to generate images in any style, including photorealistic results, and to allow edits through text descriptions or touch gestures; Genmoji creation was made faster and higher quality.[5] The Music app introduces redesigned artist pages, more immersive AutoMix transitions between songs, and folders for organising playlists.[5] The Calendar and Reminders apps support natural-language input for creating and editing events and tasks, and the Shortcuts app can generate a shortcut from a natural-language description.[5] The Clock app allows the alarm volume to be set independently of the system volume.[5] In the Health and Fitness apps, GymKit support was extended to the iPhone for pairing with gym equipment, route maps and treadmill distances are more accurate, step counts sync between the two apps, and Cycle Tracking adds support for perimenopause and menopause.[14][5] The Journal app adds generative writing prompts for inspiration.[5] The Phone app will feature the ability to have relevant information pop up while on a call, such as flight information while users call about flights.[15]
Supported devices
iOS 27 requires an iPhone with an Apple A13 Bionic chip or newer with at least 3GB of RAM, thus retaining support for all iPhones that support iOS 26. Apple Intelligence features require an Apple A17 Pro chip or newer with at least 8 GB of RAM, as found on the iPhone 15 Pro or newer.[16] Even though devices may be Apple Intelligence-ready, some features such as improved Siri voices and improved on-device dictation require an Apple A19 Pro chip or newer with at least 12 GB of RAM, found on iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.[17]
