[edit]From Arabic هَاشِمِيّ (hāšimiyy, “Hashemite”) with English suffix -ite, from هَاشِم (hāšim, “Hashim”). The name signifies "breaker of bread", from هَشَمَ (hašama, “to destroy, smash”).
