[edit]First attested in 1776. Borrowed from a Slavic language, from Proto-Slavic *bujь (“overexcited, volatile”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰuH- (“to become, to grow”).[1] Compare Serbo-Croatian бујан (“exuberant, lush”), Old Church Slavonic боуи (bui, “stupid”).
