Norwegian Bokmål

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Danish gjennem, older spelling of gennem, from Old Norse gegnum, dative plural of gegn. The spelling in -om was influenced by Nynorsk. Gjennom and mellom (between) were introduced as byforms in Bokmål in 1917 and made the sole standard in 1938. Though rare up until that time, they established themselves quickly as they had little bearing on pronunciation and were etymologically more correct (compare stundom, which had always been spelt thus).
