From earlier irge (attested in Codrington 1885), from Proto-Torres-Banks *i ra ɣai, from Proto-Oceanic *i (3rd person pronoun) + *-ra (3rd person plural suffix) + *kai (native, person). Compare with dual yoge, trial tēlge.
