Inherited from Old Spanish trasfegar, possibly from a Vulgar Latin *trānsfrīcāre (from fricō (“to rub”)) or *trānsfaecāre (from faex (“dregs”)).

Cognate with Portuguese and Galician trasfegar, Catalan trafegar, Italian trafficare.
