Personal informationLanguage experienceAfter passing the 11-plus exam in 1970 I went to the grammar school, Tiffin Boys, in Kingston-uponThames where I studied amongst other things :- 1970-77 French up to A-Level, 1972-77 German up to A-Level, 1970-72 Latin, 1975-77 Russian up to O-Level (forgotten everything except Vodka) I tended to be worse at English than foreign languages and I am especially proud that my score for English Literature O-Level (Shakespeare's As You Like It) was so poor that I received 'Unclassified', which was worse than 'Fail'. My loathing of literature that we were forced to study also caused me to fail the A-levels in French and German. Evening classes 1990-95 Spanish 1991-94 French In December 2009 I gained an upper second class (2.1) honours degree in Modern Languages (German and French) with the Open University. [This dictionary and its users were immensely helpful in achieving that. My German exam marks were consistently better than my French, which I find odd as French is a much easier language for a native English speaker, but working on the DE-EN dictionary must have made a difference.] My four years of course scores were : German 2006 : Tutor Marked Assignments 95%, Examination 91% [Distinction] 2007 : Tutor Marked Assignments 84%, Examination 81% [Grade 2] 2008 : Tutor Marked Assignments 85%, Examination 76% [Grade 2] French 2007 : Tutor Marked Assignments 92%, Examination 83% [Grade 2] 2008 : Tutor Marked Assignments 82%, Examination 66% [Grade 3] 2009 : Tutor Marked Assignments 82%, Examination 59% [Grade 3] English – Exploring the English Language 2009 : Tutor Marked Assignments 74%, Examination 59% [Grade 3] Resident in Chessington (about 20km southwest of central London), historically in the county of Surrey, but now part of the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames which is one of the 32 boroughs making up the London metropolitan sprawl. Kingston-upon-Thames is where seven Saxon kings were crowned before the Norman invasion of 1066. Born : 1959. Ethnology – three quarters southern English, one quarter southern Irish. Hobbies : - reading thrillers in English (favourite authors :- Wilbur Smith, Ian Fleming, Frederick Forsyth), in French (I have read around 85 Simenon novels so far), German and Spanish. I attend German and French conversation circles in Kingston & Surbiton. I like watching old TV crime shows from the US and GB from the 1970's. I contributed a monthly article from 2008 to 2023 to True Detective magazine, reporting on capital punishment cases in the USA, but the magazine, like so many others, has gone out of business. I'm captain of my club's darts team, and won the individuals title of my league in 2003 from a field of 120 (definitely a fluke, although the Kronenbourg 1664 was indispensable). I like walking the dogs (wire-haired Hungarian Vizslas which my brother has trained as gundogs), which I combine with birdwatching and pipesmoking (I have over 80 pipes). I also help to record and map breeding species in my area for the British Trust for Ornithology. | |||||||||||||||||
