Latvia just about beats Gibraltar to earn Nations League spot

The Latvian national football team secured a 1:0 victory over the Gibraltar national team in Rīga on Tuesday and thus retain a place in the third-tier 'C' level of the UEFA Nations League.
Following on from a narrow 1:0 win in Gibraltar last week, Latvia left it very late on Tuesday night, with the goal scored in injury time by national team captain Antonijs Černomordijs, but it was another fairly forgettable night for the long-suffering home support at Skonto Stadium with little by way of quality or entertainment on display.
Gibraltar – 202nd in the FIFA world rankings – proved game opponents for Latvia – ranked 132nd – and had several good chances of their own.
The 2:0 aggregate victory slightly improves the chances of Paolo Nicolato to retain the position of head coach of the Latvian team, though the trouble Latvia had in disposing of Gibraltar does not bode too well for the prospects against Montenegro, Armenia and Cyprus in the Nations League.
Still, at least the fans will get to see more international football – let's just hope it gets a bit better and there are more goals.
