LSM opens Latgale editorial office
"Latgale is not just a place on the map – it is a wealth of communities, languages, cultures and stories that form a strong regional identity. Latgale is one of the most ethnically diverse regions in Latvia, where Latvian, Russian, Polish, Belarusian, and other communities have historically coexisted. By opening the Latgale editorial office, we will be closer to these people, giving them the opportunity to be heard throughout Latvia.
"At the same time, Latgale is a strategically important region where reliable information and professional journalism are essential for public safety and stability. By establishing an editorial office in Latgale, we will strengthen the presence of public media, promote trust, and provide quality content that helps people navigate the complex information environment and strengthens their sense of belonging to Latvia," said Ieva Aile, LSM board member for programme and service development.
The LSM Latgale editorial team will create multimedia content in Latvian, Latgalian and Russian, taking into account the specific nature of the region's information space.
"It must be admitted that in some municipalities in Latgale there are no strong independent media outlets that systematically follow local government decisions and critically evaluate them. LSM must take on a greater role as a guardian of democracy in the regions.
"We will seek out new contacts, talk to people, and research documents and data to ensure that important issues are not overlooked. The LSM Latgale editorial office will employ local professionals who know the region's challenges and potential inside out. It is precisely this sense of belonging that will allow us to see the nuances and tell true, in-depth stories. Several languages are spoken in Latgale, many nationalities live there, Latgale is lively, strong and multi-layered – and that is exactly what our work will be like," stated Madara Bērtiņa, head of the LSM Latgale editorial office.
