Due to Russia’s war against Ukraine, unidentified drones can again fly into the Baltic states, so the public must remain vigilant. This message was issued by the relevant state authorities following Wednesday’s events, when a Ukrainian drone flew in from Russia and crashed in Latvia. What should you do in the event of a drone incident?

The armed forces of Russia and Ukraine are actively using unmanned aerial vehicles on a large scale in combat operations, for both reconnaissance and combat missions. If a person spots a drone in the air, the first thing to do is call the police. This must be done immediately to avoid.

"You must definitely call 112. It is best to do so immediately, indicating the possible flight direction– in which direction or from which direction you may have seen or heard this object flying. And, of course, under no circumstances should you approach it if it has landed," State Police spokesperson Ilze Jurēvica told Latvian Television.

At this time, there are no indications that a deliberate attack could occur. However, if drones have gone astray, you should also consider how to protect yourself by observing the aircraft’s flight path.

"If you see that this aircraft is already approaching you or suspect it might crash into you, move away from its flight path, try to find cover – a tree, a ditch – reduce your silhouette, lie down. That way, if it happens to crash, you won’t be hurt," said Intars Bērziņš, head of the Remotely Piloted Platforms Unit at the Joint Staff of the National Armed Forces.

Do not remain in your vehicle.

If a person spots or hears a drone while indoors, they should seek shelter inside and stay away from windows.

"If you are in a building and hear a drone flying, the same applies – if it is heading toward the building, try to move deeper into the building. Preferably in the basement, where the structure is more solid. Preferably behind several walls, so you’re not facing windows. Because as a result of an explosion or impact with the ground, various objects could fly through the windows,” said Bērziņš.

Likewise, you should not stand against a wall that faces windows.

Not every drone is dangerous, but every single incident must be taken seriously. Authorities also urge the public to follow official information provided by the National Armed Forces or the State Police, as well as to download the "112 Latvija" mobile app.
