Del inglés medio coste,[1] del francés antiguo coste ("costilla; lado de un objeto; costa") (cognado moderno côte ("costilla; costa; colina, pendiente"), del latín costa ("costilla; lado, pared"),[2] del protoindoeuropeo *kost-. Doblete de costa.
