8:36pm:
2010 Positions at Spoutwood Farm and Spoutwood Farm CSA

Β· Transitional Farm Manager

Β· Apprentices

Β· Interns

Spoutwood Farm CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), established in 1996 is going into its 15th year of operation. Spoutwood Farm Center, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational farm in Glen Rock, PA (southern York County), is seeking highly motivated, highly qualified applicants for the following positions:

1) Spoutwood Farm Transitional Farm Manager.

We are looking for a potential partner with whom to forge a working relationship for expanding Spoutwood’s ground operations. This would involve working closely together with Spoutwood’s owners Rob and Lucy Wood. The outcome would be a thoroughly-researched joint business plan.

This is an ideal position for a couple who want to run a farming operation. The candidate(s) should be college graduate(s) or have similar levels of life experience. Previous farm or garden experience is required. You will be expected to hit the ground running, learn by doing, and take responsibility for CSA operations quickly. Spoutwood Farm staff will be on hand to provide orientation, guidance, and answer questions. Some involvement with other Farm activities – including Festivals and Education programs – will also be included. The Transitional Farm Manager will receive a salary, lodging in Dogwood House, and of course, free vegetables from the CSA gardens.

2) Two (2) CSA Associate Apprentices. These are also full-season positions. However, here again, Associate Apprentices are expected to take on significant responsibility. Some involvement with other Farm activities – including Festivals and Education programs – will also be included. CSA Associate Apprentices receive a stipend, and free vegetables, but cannot be guaranteed lodging on the Farm. We will endeavor to work with you to solve your lodging issues.

3) CSA Interns (one month to full season, number variable). CSA Interns are typically college students or older who are interested in experiencing community supported agriculture from the inside. Interns may assist with all aspects of CSA operations, but do not have the level of responsibility expected of Apprentices, and need not sign up for the full season. CSA Interns normally do not receive a stipend, but we will work with you to obtain credit at your school, if desired, and you will receive vegetables from the CSA gardens.

For all positions drive, dedication, commitment, and enthusiasm are essential. So is a sense of humor, and a willingness to adjust/adapt to rapidly changing circumstances and unexpected challenges. All candidates help promote Spoutwood’s educational mission and it’s overall keynote of Hospitality. Note that all positions involve sometimes hard physical labor, in a wide range of weather conditions! Willingness and ability to work well with others, including one’s fellow apprentices & interns, permanent Spoutwood staff, CSA shareholders, and the general public is vital.

Please send resume and cover letter to Spoutwood Farm at 717-235-6610 or spoutwood@comcast.net.

8:47pm: Spoutwood Work Day and YARD SALE
Big thanks to Myrtle for coming out to help Rob, Lucy and I at the workday at Spoutwood today!

Rob and Lucy worked diligently on the first floor of the Chicken Barn while Myrtle and I tackled the very big job of organizing, inventorying and returning ALL signs and banners back to a nice neat, cleaned, swept corner of the Chicken Barn attic. There is MUCH more to do including the 2nd floor of the Chicken Barn, the remainder of the 1st floor of the Chicken Barn, EZ Up tent inventory and maintenance and complete cleanout of the Sunshine/CSA office basement!

We are hoping for a MUCH better turnout tomorrow from 12pm-5pm! Potluck to follow!

***YARD SALE***

We are getting rid of clutter at the farm! In fact, we have set a date for a Spoutwood Family Yard Sale! Friday September 18 and Saturday September 19...exact times to be determined. Yes, there is a Mother Earth Harvest Fair meeting on Saturday at 1pm! We think this will be good opportunity to not only raise funds for the Farm, get rid of clutter and socialize, but also to promote Mother Earth Harvest Fair and the Farm itself!

If you would like to take part in the yard sale, the cost is $10 per 10x10 space. You provide your own tents/tables/etc if needed. We will be promoting the Yard Sale in the local newspapers, with road signage as well as posting it on the website!

We are also considering having a potluck and possible concert one evening of the two. Please email me at posie@spoutwood.org if you have any suggestions for this, if you would like to help coordinate or if you may be interested in participating in the yard sale.

Thanks!

Posie

3:46pm: Help needed in York PA
Spoutwood Farm has been invited to participate in a great Green event in York City on April 18th from 10am-4pm on Beaver Street between Philadelphia and Market Streets.

We would very much like to take part but our three main "point people" are occupied that day, so we need someone to pick up all setup items from the Farm, set up at the event, boothsit, teardown and take everything back to the Farm. Of course, this doesn't have to be all the same person! Someone could pickup, setup and boothsit for a bit...and then people can sign up for 2 hours shifts to boothsit. We would also like costumed fairies to wander around and pass out Festival info. Then someone can tear down and take everything back to the Farm.

If you are willing to help out, PLEASE contact Posie with any questions you may have: fairyfestivities@yahoo.com

Thank you!

5:42pm: Kubiando Yall
The other day i was running errands with my son Shannon, here in Carlisle. In front of us there was a vehicle completely plastered with bumper stickers, you know, funny sayings, some were political, environmental and/or religious (pagan) in nature.

Shannon says "Look at all the stickers on that car Mommy"

"Yes, I see it"

"I like the green one best"

I look, do a double take and see its a green "Kubiando" sticker right smack dab in the center of the rear of the car.

It gave me a thrill.

The auction is shaping up to have some outstanding items donated. :) Costuming items for fairy costumes, handmade jewelry, I do believe that we have a full fairy costume being donated. There are costumes and accessories for bellydance costumes. There is a night at a gorgous B&B in Historic Ellicott City, Dance Lessons from a ballroom studio, a photosession with the amazing photographer that created the above flyer (and yes the photo is hers as well). As well as other items from vendors that attend the fairie festival as well.

So come on out and help us with this great cause. :)

6:22pm: Thanks to all Parade Participants
Hi Everyone!

Just wanted to say thanks to all who came out to the York St Patty's Parade today! It was a lovely day and so wonderful to see everyone! A great warm-up for the upcoming festivities!

We had about 50 people join us in the parade and we handed out posters, postcards and magic stones as well as sprinkled fairy dust on those who desired a touch of pixie magic! Everyone looked their "fairy" best as usual and we had a fairy horn section in addition to banjo, drums and an array of other hand held noisemakers! It was chaos (as usual) but I think we had a big impact on everyone as we sauntered past...bringing fairy joy to all who laid eyes upon us!

Id like to extend apologies to all: I was extremely distracted by the presence of my (soon to be 5 year old) son, my primary concern was where he was, he was zig-zagging all over the place!...so if I seemed "out of it" and if I didn't say a formal goodbye to you, please accept my apologies...my King was in dire need of a restroom and my Prince definately was on the verge of a meltdown. So I had to skedaddle!

Thanks again for coming out to support Spoutwood Farm and the Fairie Festival! We love you all!

Remember tomorrow we have a General Planning meeting at 2pm! Hope to see you there!

Kubiando!

Who else is super excited about the Fairie Festival? My wife and I go EVERY year, and with all the snow we've been having lately (we're in Buffalo, NY! We were almost snowed in last weekend! *laughs*), we've been obsessing about what costumes to wear, and basically everything about the Fairie Festival lately - we're ready for spring!!!

So, who's with me? Who else has been checking the site's "This many days to the Festival" counter obsessively? Who else is planning their costumes already? Who is also this excited? *laughs*
