Does it work for you if I say,

Both women shared compassion for victims of war.
I definitely miss the article before compassion in this sentence, Shandol. I am accustomed to seeing an indefinite article in similar sentences: They shared a love for music. They shared an interest in Japanese culture.
- Both women shared a (sense of) compassion for victims of war.

It's not using "a" as if there was an object called "a compassion".
