accepted view

hello everybody,

how may I translate: " it was not the accepted view of the poem. The accepted view was that the envoy was horrified by what the Duc told him."

I tralslated it like this:

"Ce n'etait pas le vrai sense du poem, le vrai sense etait que......."

so!!!!

Well I guess, you can use "sens" talking of a poem. "Signification" or "interprétation" would be more suitable (but then you need to be sure that "view" would also mean "meaning"). About "accepted", I would say "communément admis" ou "usuel" ou "traditionnel" ou "courante". So it would give sthg like:

Ce n'était pas l'interprétation communément admise de ce poème.

But let see what the literary people will say.
