I'd like to know if this sentece is ok
John and his two friends grew up, but this admiration for Peter remained intact.

Should I say "had remained intact" or "remained intact"?
Yes, maybe this can help. i don't know if it is correct anyway
Peter was an intellectual man who evaluated things philophically. I think that John and the rest of the boys in the same group admired Peter's intellect, great wit and cleverness. In fact, John and his two friends grew up, but this admiration for Peter remained intact;

This version is fine if you have no more context.

You would use 'had remained intact, if you were going to add something about something else that happened in the past.

John and his two friends rarely agreed about anything, but this admiration for Peter had remained intact.
I can't see any reason for using the past perfect for 'remained intact'. They all 'grew up'. I think there's something I'm missing or not understanding. Why do you think a past perfect is needed?
Added Cagey puts it well.
They had grown up and were no longer friends, but they still admired Peter
thank you!
I see, sorry I find past perfect confusing.
I think that if the admiration continues also now, then one should say "has remained intact". Am I wrong?
