Ale?

Ale.. a le.. jale? What are the bus attendants saying in Central America? Is it Spanish? Is it regional? Is it jale (ride)? Is it "a le"? The intent, I think, is "hurry up".
I've heard ¡Jale! there as well, and I believe you're right for "Hurry up, come on, go ahead," etc.
Yes, that's what it means. It's in the dictionary, in fact:

hale.

1. interj. hala.

hala.

(Voz expr.).

1. interj. U. para infundir aliento o meter prisa.

2. interj. U. para mostrar sorpresa.

3. interj. U. para llamar.

4. interj. U. para denotar la persistencia en una marcha. U. repetida.

Did you hear that in Guatemala? If so... I can bet that what you heard was "¡ale, dale!". Bus drivers around here are (sad to say) quite imprudent, and they keep changing lanes. So their attendants (called "brochas" in popular argot) help them turn right, since the bus is so crowded that the driver can't see anything. When it's all clear, the brocha would say "¡Dale!" and the driver makes a sudden maneuver to the right.

The "D" is barely pronounced, by the way.

Regards.
