alienated

Hi!
What does mean in the following passage? It is from the book The Medieval Persian Gulf, by Brian Ulrich, p. 83. Of course, I know the meaning of "alienated", but, in this context, it is somehow problematic for me. If Shafiˁism was alienated, how did people convert to it?

During this period, Oman, too, saw a flourishing of Sunni Islam. The Ibadi imamate collapsed amidst a civil war at the end of the 800s, and the country entered a period of control by the Buyids, Seljuqs, and their local Omani allies. Many in northern Oman adopted Shafiˁism, alienated by the tribal backers of one of the parties related to the civil war.

Thanks very much.
Dear Velisarius:
Thanks very much. Does it mean "people who were tired of wars, converted to Shafiˁism"?

I don't know exactly what this means:
"...alienated by the tribal backers of one of the parties related to the civil war".
I would take that to mean that people from both sides were tired of the civil war and of their particular tribal leaders involving them in it and defected to a group that had no allegiance to either side.

Oman was the field of civil war in which several tribal wings were involved, and one of these tribal supporters, seemingly, harassed people severely.

It's very badly written but, as I understand it:

Many in northern Oman, who had been alienated by the tribal backers of one of the parties related to the civil war, adopted Shafiˁism.
