How would one translate "all by himself" in the sense of "he did it all by himself" i.e. with no other help ? Is "sich allein" correct, or am I way off ?

I think it's "ganz alleine (etwas machen)". For example:

"Seht mal, was unsere Jennie ganz alleine gemacht hat! Ist das nicht toll!" 👁 Big Grin :D
I understand "by himself" as singlehanded, unassisted or, as you put it, without help. I guess there are quite a lot of possible German equivalents. How about:

Er hat es (ganz) allein geschafft/getan/gemacht/erledigt.
Er hat es ohne (jede) Hilfe geschafft/....
Er hat es eigenhändig geschafft/ ... (sounds a bit awkward but is thinkable in specific contexts)

"Er hat es sich allein gemacht." Bedeutet er hat bis zum Orgasmus onanniert / hat sich durch Onanie befriedigt.
