Does allowed mean "given" in the quotation below? Thank you very much for your help.
‘No,’ I said to the man at the border. ‘I am not a German. I am a Jew, who Belgium handed over to the Nazis to die. But I lived. And now, I am coming into Belgium.’ They couldn’t argue with that, and not only did they let me in, they gave me double rations. I was allowed extra butter, bread and meat, all of which were rare under post-war rationing.
