I am reading "The Good and Faithful Servant" by Joe Orton. I was wondering why "Staff" has been capitalized and he says almost?
Scene Sixteen.
"Old man: Where did you work?
Buchanan: I was almost Staff.
Old man: (impressed) Were you?
Buchanan: I was in charge of the Main Entrance."
He almost reached the "exalted" position of Staff. 👁 Smile :)
I don't know the tone here, but I think Staff is capitalized because he was not only a title, perhaps on a plastic lapel badge, but a goal for this person -- a sign of recognition and worth and acceptance.
