I don't think that specifically/clearly means painting nails. Let's see what others say.
Yes, I guess "doing" covers a broader meaning.
"Doing her nails" on Google comes up with many photos of women (and a cat👁 Eek! :eek:
) paring, filing and painting their nails.
I think "doing the nails" means to cut/pair the nails only.
Nah. Just google it and look at the pictures of people "doing her nails."
Maybe it used to mean cut/pair only, but definitely not so these days.
"Doing one's nails" has a wider scope than "painting one's nails". In the photo, the woman is just painting her nails. She might have cut (pared👁 Wink ;)
) them and filed them and creamed them the day before. 👁 Big Grin :D
Hmm...lotions, cuticle creams - something of that sort. I don't "do" my nails, I confess. It isn't very relevant to the question.

For me, The woman is applying (the) nail polish to her nails sounds very natural, but not as informal or everyday as "She's painting/varnishing her nails".
