avert and avoid

Hello,
Can I use avert instead of avoid in this sentence: "The company will have to sell off assets to avoid bankruptcy."? I don't think that's possible, but I don't know why. It doesn't sound good to me. Is it a possible substitute for avoid, though?
If they avoid bankruptcy, they move away from it. If they avert bankruptcy they cause it to move away from them.

Either is acceptable in my opinion.

Oh, I see. I don't use avert very often. In either case they will still have to sell off their assets, yes?
Thank you Biffo 👁 Smile :)
