Awake

Hi,

I've always been wondering why we said " Are you awake ? " instead of " Are you awoken? "

Could someone help me out ?
Hi Lindsay,

Awake is a condition one may be in. It's a state of consciousness. Awoken is a rather rare past participle of the verb to awake. It's little used, and sounds less idiomatic to AE ears than awakened.
Whenever we have both a participle and an adjective that express the same idea, the adjective is preferred. You can also see this with the words addictive and addicting. They both express the same idea, but addictive is preferred. There may be examples to the contrary, but I can't think of any off hand.
