In his autobiography, R. McAlmon tells how a friend of his show him some poetry he wrote. McAlmon "has little to say" and concludes : "It only made me feel that I was very after-war, calloused, and non-literary if to be literary means showing back and forth one’s efforts at inopportune moments.
Does "show back and forth efforts" mean here something like he's not always ready to say something to people who ask for his judgment ?
