bedridden

I gave an explanation why I can not go to class:
It so happened that I have had such a serious fever that I had to be bedridden since yesterday.
Is 'bedridden' natural in a sick leave note?
I would not use it in a sick note. You could say "I have been confined to bed", although this is a bit formal.
We never say "I had to be bedridden" but "I have been bedridden since yesterday".

Of course, bedridden is used in both speech and writing, but it is more likely to refer to a long period, e.g. She has been bedridden for the last six months.
