Hi, please, what does brass rail mean in here (from The Great Gatsby) ? :

In the main hall a bar with a real brass rail was set up, and stocked with gins and liquors and with cordials so long forgotten that most of his female guests were too young to know one from another.

It is a metal railing (tubular, like a pipe) about 3 in in diameter, smooth and shiny. People may use it as foot rest.

Yes, probably. A 'service rail' would be specified.
