build hammock

Hi all, this is from book Break point by Ollie Ollerrton and probably question for some non-civilian

(Context: he describes Selection training for SBS): And before getting your head down, you build your hammock in the pitch black of the jungle.... - I'm not sure: is some kind of hammock part of soldier's kit, so you have to only hang it (build 👁 Confused
) between trees, or you have to actually build it, like Bear Grylls in Man vs Wild, for example from bark? Thanks for your answers
I think you only have to hang it, but what makes it challenging is the pitch dark. You actually have to find a good place to hang it, and make sure it's a tree and not the sergeant's neck, and that you don't get tangled with all the other hammocks.
Hi, Edinburgher and thanks for your answer. Honestly, I thought that they have to actually build it, 'cause this is hard selection for SBS, which is supposed to test your skills....in some bad situation you might not have your kit and thus you'd have to improvise and, for example, make hammock 👁 Smile :-)
Hammocks are for softies. Real men will just sleep standing up.
Honestly, I thought that they have to actually build it
I think it means exactly that. Otherwise, it would just say hang up or string up or setup or put up. Something along those lines of putting up a hammock packed in the tote bag.
Hi, pops 91710 and thanks for your answer. Yeah, really build it in pitch black is certainly more challenging, and why would directing staff making something easy for them in Selection? Like: "Ok, lads, unpack your hammocks and go to sleep". I don't really thinks so. IMHO it's more like: "Build that f*****g thing and take a nap" 👁 Stick Out Tongue :p
I wonder if it has something more to it than just hanging it. Maybe they need to hang it and then camoflage it or build some protection over it or something.
If it's possible to build a hammock, then I don't know what a hammock is. 👁 Eek!
You could build a stand to hang it from, but you can't build anything from cloth and ropes.
Jungle hammocks are far more intricate affairs than the ones you had in your backyard.

They consist of a hammock, an integrated mosquito net structure, and an independent fly to keep the sun and rain out. I never put one up, but it sounds a lot more complicated than stringing a rope between two trees.

This is not military issue, but a copy:

Our company makes some heavy wire forms (5/16" diameter) about 2 feet long for a contractor that makes these things. I don't know how it is incorporated in the hammock, but it does get assembled to the hammock.

I don't know that I would "build" a hammock, but "assemble" or "erect" might be applicable.

It's still something already made, and the making of it is not a process of "building." Even at the factory, I doubt they would say "We build hammocks."
Hi Myridon, I know for sure that in one episode Man vs Wild Bear Grylls made "hammock", but not form bark (as I said before), but from bamboo <-----Video link removed by moderator (Florentia52)-----> I still believe, that they did'nt have their own hammock from factory, but they have to make one...Of course, I don't know it for sure, maybe you're right

I forgot mention it - the Selection was in jungle

There's no problem with "make a hammock." The issue is "build."

No, I would not say "build" as I noted in my post. "Erect" or "assemble" makes sense, in the same sense as erecting a tent.
Hi, Packard, but in case of tent you know that it is product from shop, but in this case we don't know if they actually made hammok in place, or hung some bought product from shop between trees?

Here's the full context (from Google Books, which cannot be copied or quoted): Break Point

It just seems like a sloppy choice of words. I think any reading into "building" beyond a sloppy choice of words is probably a waste of effort.

The writing is generally good though. I can see no reason for the "build".
You keep switching to "make." Making the hammock is entirely possible. "Build" is just not a word that we use for making something like that from those kinds of materials. You can make clothing, but you can't build clothing. You can build a house, but you can't make a house.
The original sentence could be some "Special Forces" jargon as you suggested by asking for "some non-civilian." For us normal folks, "build" doesn't work with "hammock."
Yes, Myridon, your precisely described my problem 👁 Smile :-)
. But pops 91710 made interesting point: "Otherwise, it would just say hang up or string up or setup or put up. Something along those lines of putting up a hammock packed in the tote bag." "Build" is entirely weird word in this case, but if they had some hammocks from shop, he would say something like "setup" or "put up" hammock, wouldn't he?

I think you are over-analyzing here. It was just a poor choice of words on the part of the writer.

I really have to "over-analyzing", if I didn't have to, I wouldn't do that. I just really need to know, if build = make or take out from bag, becasue these are entirely different things 👁 Wink ;)

And if a normal person didn't have a hammock from a shop, he would say something like "make a hammock" or "weave a hammock from palm fronds" or something other than "build."
Yes, indeed. Well, we probably don't figure out the right answer. But I still thank you all for your responses and time, I really appreciate it 👁 Wink ;)
