Buttload

I heard the word "buttload" in a tv-serie yesterday, and I was wondering if it's a swear word or not. I always thought it was the same as "shitload" or "assload", but since I heard it in "Modern Family", I must assume it is not. Can it be used in an informal but still "polite" context? Is it an euphemism, like 'oh my gosh', with 'gosh' instead of 'god', or it's a complete independent word? I'd like to understand in which contest can it be used, if it's a sort of slang word or if it's totally accepted...

Thanks in advance!
It means "a lot" and it is somewhat less coarse than the term "shitload."

You can use it with any friends of yours who aren't shocked or annoyed by coarse language. None of my friends would flinch at the word "buttload", but I wouldn't use it in polite company.
