Capelluto

Ciao a tutti: Recently I discovered a distant cousin in southern Italy (Il Mezzogiorno) who, in trying to describe the branch of the family from which she is descended, used the soprannome "capeluta" to distinguish her grandmother's clan. I understand the way a nickname is employed to label families, but I cannot discover the literal meaning of the word "capeluta." Can anyone help? Grazie in anticipo.
Are you sure it isn't "capelluta", which means longhaired?
Thanks, underhouse. It may well be "capelluta," but my cousin spelled it with one "l." I'm guessing it was her typo. Thanks again.
