Привет!

I'm working on a small translation, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to translate "case" as a verb in its slang sense. Basically, it can mean "to examine or survey (a house, bank, etc.) in planning a crime." E.g. they cased the store before robbing it.

What would a good translation for this be? Something equally slangy would be ideal.
We have "пробить" which once used as a slang word means "to gather information about smth/smb".
If I say to you "Пробей этот (телефонный) номер" this means that I'm asking you to investigate who the phone number belongs to.
I'm not sure if the word can be used in your case. May be: "Они пробили обстановку в магазине перед ограблением" But in this case you'd better use something slangy for "ограблениe" as well.
Thanks for the reply, and that sounds like a good fit.

I'm not actually translating that sentence; just wanted to give some more information.

Thanks again.
