Hello Everyone,

The following sentence is taken from Yahoo. I don't know exactly the meaning of caucus, though its definition can be found in the dictionary. Could you briefly explain it with the actual situation there so that I can better comprehend it?

Mitt Romney is coming under fire from two of his GOP rivals amid reports his campaign pushed Nevada to move up its Republican presidential caucus. Romney is expect to do well in Nevada, so scheduling the state's caucus at an earlier time would likely boost momentum behind his 2012 bid.

Thanks and Regards

It is a special instance of this definition of caucus:

  • 1 a meeting of the members of a legislative body who belong to a particular political party, to select candidates or decide policy.
In this case, it is a meeting of the Republican voters who will decide whom the state will support as the Republican nominee for president. The exact procedures vary from state to state. If you want to know more, this Wiki article includes a description of the procedure in Nevada: Nevada Republican caucuses, 2008.

In addition, this previous thread may be helpful: caucus vs. polls
