cause resentment

Hello, my friends,

I have been reading a book named the simple life edited by Roth and come across sentences like:

β€œOur goal is to show others how to live on less without succumbing to soul-shriveling practices that cause resentment and feelings of deprivation. Our goal is β€œupscale, simplified living.””

I was wondering what does resentment mean in the context. I cannot refer to it as anger since such behavior is not so vicious that will make people feel disgusted. I guess it might mean "making people unpleasant" but I am not sure whether resentment can be refer to that way.
Can you tell us a little bit more about the book's thesis? I can make a guess based on the title, but I'd hate to guess wrong. A little more context (not necessarily a quote - just more about what the author is saying) would be helpful.
"that cause resentment", here, means "that do not make them (the others) feel displeased/indignant/put out" or "that don't make them begrudge the suggestions/new way of living"

It tells the readers how to lead a simple life and it mainly consists of some principles realising what is a simple life as well as some tricks in saving money or making more money to live more freely.

The writer encourage the readers to downscale, a term simply means live to the extent of necessity.
